This day in history - October 30

Post by seamusTX »

1735 - John Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts.

1938 - Orson Welles directed a broadcast of H.G. Wells's "The War of the Worlds." A certain amount of panic ensued, though accounts are not historically verifiable.

1974 - Muhammad Ali beat George Foreman in a match in Kinshasa, Zaïre, known as the rumble in the jungle. It was Foreman's first defeat and Ali's 45th victory.

1975 - The New York Daily News ran the headline "Ford to City: Drop Dead" after President Gerald Ford said he would veto any proposed federal bailout of New York City.

New York roared back without a government bailout. This is a minor footnote to history unless you happen to remember the event.

Could it be that, lacking a bailout, they were forced to reform themselves or die?

Yeah, the Johns "made sumpin' of themselves"; But Samuel "made Tea."
(OLD Family joke; and a bad one IMHO)
(John and Samuel were family names from the Adamses marrying into the Bass Family which married with the Alden family.)

That is pretty much how I remember it.

If you're old enough to remember the financial and social deterioration of New York City in the 1970s compared to what the city is today, the change has been amazing. Among other phenomena, New York probably has the lowest rate of violent crime of any big American city.

Of course, they had to cancel a few clauses of the bill of rights to achieve that....
