1941 - The krauts sank the USS Reuben James in the Atlantic.
Arguably it was the first hostile shot fired at a U.S. asset in World War II.

1967 - Nguyen Van Thieu became president of South Vietnam.

A footnote to history now, the details of Vietnamese politics were on the front page in that era.

1984 - Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her bodyguards.

1517 - Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany starting the Protestant Reformation.

Sorry I missed that.

There were protestants before Luther, of course, but they were mostly beheaded, burned at the stake, etc. Luther made it stick.
