I have a lot of heartburn with parents who put their kid's first name, school and or sports team and activities on the back glass of their vehicles. But today at WalMart I saw the worst example of peddling your daughter to a pedophile I've ever seen. On the rear window was a sticker with the child's first AND last name her school and that she was on the drill team. This is a Junior High School student! When will parents wake up and realize that they are advertising to each and every pedophile that passes their vehicle and the world is full of evil people.

I was at Lowes last year around Christmas time. I started talking to a guy who was looking at trees next to me. Really nice guy. then his family comes up. Pretty wife and two young healthy boys with hats on. On the hats were their names.

All I could think of was how easy it would be for a pedophile or some other evil person to lure them and take them away. all they would have to do is say "Hey (insert name). How are you? Im a friend of your parents."

Are there any credible accounts of criminals targeting a child because of this, as opposed to news stories about the drill team (with photos) or school yearbooks or online communities or shopping malls?

My daughter was so cute when she was about 2 - 3 yrs old it almost gave me an ulcer because she got so much attention. Once she hit about 13 she wasn't so cute anymore. Almost got an ulcer during that time too. It was the wrong time to stop sniffin glue.

I'm a suspicious 'ole boy and believe that anything you put out for public consumption can be used against you by someone for something. Telling the world that "Jane Doe" is on the drill team at Anytown Jr. High just makes it easier for those who may not have the most honest intentions to do their thing. You can be proud of your kids and what they do without exposing them to unnecessary danger.

Along with this is the habit of posting signs in front of the house with the name of the band/team the kid is involved in. This is a sure indication that the family will be at the big game, and an open invitation for unwanted persons to drop in during the game to browse the house.

Plano PD showed us several examples of this scenario being used by criminals during the Citizens' Police Academy.

The most rescent horrifing incident along these lines was the cheerleader who was raped in her bed at night with the parents at home asleep. It happened in the Northern suburbs of Houston in a safe luxury gated community of very large homes. (large homes equal you don't hear what is going on in the other parts of the house).

The rapist was clued into the fact that a young attractive girl lived at the house because they had placed one of those little innocent wood signs in the front yard painted in the school colors that had the high school symbol and the word "Cheerleader" written on it.

In this case that was all it took.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a problem with this habit. There is a SUV in League City that has stickers and names for the whole family... including the dog!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a problem with this habit. There is a SUV in League City that has stickers and names for the whole family... including the dog!

People worry too much. I don't know why they worry so much about strangers snatching kids, it almost neverhappens. Molesters almost always know the family and are trusted. Preachers, teachers, coaches, scout masters, relatives by marriage, single mom's boyfriend, those are the real threats.

People are scarred of sharks. One person a year is killed by sharks in America. I saw a funny article today that said over 20 people are killed by cows every year in America. Discovery don't have a "cow week", and I don't know nobody with a cow phobia. Man just down the road in Waskom was killed by a buck in rut today. Last year another east tex man was killed by a buck in rut. Throw in deer commiting kama kazie on cars, and it's about 130 people killed every year by deer. I don't see people stayin outta the woods because they scared of deer.

I guess if Nancy Grace got worked up about cows and deer like sh edoes child molesters, we might have a panic in America.

I didn't put the kids names on their shirts when they were too little to know better and might of got fooled by someone calling their name, but by the time they were junior high they knew better (still didn't put names on the trucks, because it looks stupid and preppy). The one where a cheerleader was raped becaue of the yard sign is hard, but the rapist had to know more than that. He got in the house and found her room, and they didn't have good locks, an alarm, or any dogs I guess.

My baby girl is all growed up and is super pretty. Somebody tried to rape her, she'd dot his eye with that .38. She only needs pepper spary to squirt in the bullet hole cause he made her mad.

We learned long ago not to advertise and associate the kids names (for a bit different reason, but the idea was to keep them secure). Many parents I talk to have NO idea they are causing any type of security risk with a sign on the back of the car that says "Billie Jean #33 Girls Volleyball Arlington Jr. High" the thought never crosses their mind. You have to wonder if they have taught their children any type of social boundaries when dealing with strangers.

Just because it "almost never happens" does not mean that it will never happen. Advertising like that is just putting a bigger target on you and your family. It is not safe and it is not smart.
