CMP, if you are a member, sells them from $500-$1500. A typical shooter will run around $800. Plan on reloading for it if you don't want to go bankrupt.

I LOVE my Garand. It shoots and functions flawlessly. A real piece of American history :patriot:

Here's a list of CMP affiliated organizations that qualify you as a CMP "member." If you are a member of any of these, you're good to go. TSRA is one of them.

I remember in the early '80's a local gun store in Charlotte, NC, where I lived, was selling surplus Garands for under $100. Most were in good shape. I kick myself for not picking one up. At the time I really wanted a gun with a >=20rd detachable magazine. Now I'd be happy to settle for an M1 with the 8 round clips...

A nice shooter goes for about $700.00 to $800.00. You have to be a member of a CMP affiliated club to purchase from the CMP. Not really sure of any here in Texas, but they don't need to be in Texas. I re-joined the California Rifle and Pistol assoc. back about 5 years ago so I could order from the CMP even though I no longer lived there. Anyhow, the CMP is your best route as they are the best deal for the money, you just have to go through the hoops.

TSRA (Texas State Rifle Association) is I am sure an affiliated club. Costs like small bucks a year or so and is one, if not the strongest, of voices for shooters in Tex Legislature. Check for a table at the entrance to the next gun show, or look online for TSRA. Pearland Shooters are also affiliated I believe, and Bayou Rifles as well. I do not recommend you join either of them JUST to qualify for CMP. Both have excellent facilities for rifles. Pearland has (IMHO) a far more accepting attitude toward new members.

TSRA is affiliated; we qualified with CMP using TSRA, for our Garands and Carbines.

Also if you are retired military, all you have to do is send a copy of your DD-214 along with your money (for me it was $625.00) last year and you are good to go. BTW Rgoldy, I like your avatar. I was a proud member of that elite group myself...
