Just some random thoughts here:
1) Kicked through the drywall, tied sheets together and rappelled down 5 stories of vertical wall.

2) Proceeds on foot to a location where he could steal vehicle and then drive all the way up to Dallas

3) Invades a woman's home, threatens her and takes her car

Just what exactly was he in the hospital for? He seems mighty darn healthy to me.........

Lesson for the lady whose house he entered: LOCK YOUR DOOR!

I'm glad she wasn't seriously hurt or killed.

...62 $5 gift certificates from Subway restaurants...
Subway's OK, but 62 sandwiches would be a bit much.

... kicked through the drywall of his seventh-floor cell ...
Aha. We no longer have "fortified" drywall. ;-)
The man entered a woman’s unlocked home and, ... stole ... some clothing ...
So he was disguised in drag when captured?

Probably a male relative's clothing. Also, most women own some unisex clothing like T-shirts and shorts.

Tuesday the escapee in this case pled to felony escape. He was sentenced to nine additional years to be served after he finishes his 35-year sentence for burglary, aggravated assault, and two previous escape attempts.

I frequently work off duty at the local emergency room. We frequently have inmates brought from TDCJ brought in. I find the guarding SOPs peculiar...the two guards share a revolver between the two of them. All inmates have at least two guards, and they know little about the offenders background. They say this keeps them from being biased against certain offenders (child predators etc).

I know deadly force is authorized under penal code to prevent inmate escape. Just sayin...
§ 9.52. PREVENTION OF ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY. The use of
force to prevent the escape of an arrested person from custody is
justifiable when the force could have been employed to effect the
arrest under which the person is in custody, except that a guard
employed by a correctional facility or a peace officer is justified
in using any force, including deadly force, that he reasonably
believes to be immediately necessary to prevent the escape of a
person from the correctional facility.
Emphasis mine.

I have pointed out in other threads that when officers bring prisoners to UTMB, the officers disarm themselves and put a rag in their holster.

I have seen some of these prisoners. They are usually shackled to a wheelchair and in sad shape. The present case is an exception, a young, overall healthy prisoner.

What's the point of that?

You would have to ask them. I've seen it more than once—a blue shop rag like you can buy in packages at auto parts stores.

In case a druggie robs the hospital pharmacy and goes on a shooting spree, you have a tourniquet handy?
(just kidding, I really don't know; I assume it's like the zip-ties at gun shows, to show that holster is empty)

I would bet it is to let others know that they did not just leave their weapon behind unintentionally. The rag is a placeholder until they return to the storage area for the real thing.
