MD: Hunter shoots camouflaged friend
In Wingate, Maryland (Chesapeake shore), two friends old enough to know better were hunting together. One man, who was in a deer stand, shot the other, who was wearing camouflage.

Nope.Beiruty wrote:No Orange vest?
I thought they were required everywhere, but ...
Did some news report say a shotgun was used?Oldgringo wrote:Shotguns?
The shooting victim is in critical condition.

If I had a choice, I think I would prefer a stray hit with a rifle to buckshot. A single buckshot shell is like the entire magazine from a small-caliber handgun.

Re: MD: Hunter shoots camouflaged friend
You know, if these idiots would follow one of the most important rules of gun safety when they hunt, all this nonsense would be avoided. That rule is, IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET, AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT, BEFORE YOU SHOOT. If these moron hunters out and about today would just follow that simple rule, there would be no need for orange vests, and no one would be "accidentally" shot. I do not believe these are accidental, I believe they are negligent, and think the shooter should be charged with a crime. Just like that guy who killed his kid "accidentally" when he shot at a noise in the woods. I've NEVER seen a human in camo that looked ANYTHING like a game animal.
Re: MD: Hunter shoots camouflaged friend
Yes, but with a shotgun at some distance (like far enough away to be confused between a man and a deer), there would likely be a lot of misses by some of the projectiles in the spreading pattern - approximately 1 inch spread per yard of distance.seamusTX wrote:Nope.Beiruty wrote:No Orange vest?

Also one has to ask, no optics? Where is the rule: ID what you shoot?

the hunter walking next to them. Avoids overtravel when swinging to shoot. Other states require a certain number of
"Ten Mile" or hunter orange square inches be worn. As in a vest, shirt or cover garment. Others require vest and hat in hunter
orange etc.
At the range a shotgun would be effective in downing a deer with buck shot, ANY experienced hunter should have a good
visual of the animal and know the difference between deer/man. Early dawn or dusk..... the same rule applies whether
using a shotgun or rifle: IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET, AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT, BEFORE YOU SHOOT !!! If it's too dark, or you're
unsure for whatever reason, hold your fire.
When I read about this type of hunting incident one word immediately pops into mind: Stupid.
Re: MD: Hunter shoots camouflaged friend
Enjoy your hunt.
Incidents of this sort are rare. That's why they are news.
More hunters are injured in falls than shooting incidents.

Since they were in a yankee state, I assumed...seamusTX wrote:Did some news report say a shotgun was used?Oldgringo wrote:Shotguns?

In any event, it's not cool to shoot your friends in camouflage suits.
Re: MD: Hunter shoots camouflaged friend
Maryland is not a Yankee state. Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon line.
Maryland has a centerfire rifle season. Also shotgun, muzzleloader, air rifle, and bow for various game: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/huntersguide/weapon.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As is West Virginia. You know, that part of Virginia that seceeded from the mother state after Gettysburg. If it was a state and was not part of the confederacy, the only thing left is yankee, IMO.seamusTX wrote:Maryland is not a Yankee state. Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon line.
Re: MD: Hunter shoots camouflaged friend
This is exactly why I wear orange everywhere I go. My neighbor painted his truck Camo, we were in a big empty parking lot, and I walked right into it.
