Not sure. I think the FBI check is only a component of the other one.

I would think that if there was something in your past that would disqualify you from obtaining your CHL, you would certainly know about it. It would have involved the courts, a conviction, which surely, you would remember happening.

Well, I must admit to ignorance about how one would do this on himself. I've had many performed on me due to my work, and they are extremely thorough. We suspect that's how my CHL came through so quickly. I'd say it would be unusual for a true FBI background check to miss anything of consequence. :headscratch

Not saying you won't, but be sure you disclose everything on your application. Falsifying a government document is a Class A misdemeanor. :smash:

I dunno either how you would do an "FBI" background check on yourself, but because you don't know about it doesn't mean "it" is not on any records the FBI may have about you. Unless you think the FBI has a perfect record in maintaining its files. ;-) People have done FOIA requests on themselves for FBI records and sometimes been surprised at what was there.

It can be done, go to the FBI web site they will tell you how, police finger prints an all. I know what's on my record, I recently had some things taken care of & removed. I just asked a question thats all. I'm not going to air my dirty laundry on an open forum. I've never had to fill one of these out in during vietnam just trying to make things right. I know a lot of goody two shoes that never had the guts to change a tire in the dark & the guy that has a CHL because he's scared he might get dog bit. If your scared of your own shadow CHL is not the answer. Your either Clark Kent or Superman a CHL doesn't change it. I've been carrying for 15 years. The state of TX didn't tell me I could protect my family, thats a decision I made with the constitution of the United States of America.

Any other advice would be gladly taken.

Thanks for the helpful replies.

I didn't realize this was only a FOIA request, sorry. The only FBI background check I would trust to be complete would be an actual Background Investigation, which includes f-t-f interviews with acquaintances and associates. If that wasn't performed, I would definitely not rely on this report to "show clear." :coolgleamA:

I didn't realize this was only a FOIA request, sorry. ...:
I didn't say that the original poster (Spanky2313) actually did a FOIA, just pointing out that people have done so in the past and speculated this might be the case in this instance.

However, he cleared that up in his second post by pointing out that you can in fact go to the FBI website and request your own records from them (which is separate from a FOIA request, which you can also find on the FBI website). Specifically, you can make an Identification Record Request, which according to the website (my emphasis):
An FBI Identification Record—often referred to as a criminal history record or a “rap sheet”—is a listing of certain information taken from fingerprint submissions retained by the FBI in connection with arrests and, in some instances, federal employment, naturalization, or military service. The process of responding to an Identification Record request is generally known as a criminal background check.

...

Individuals typically make this request for personal review, to challenge the information on record, to satisfy a requirement for adopting a child in the U.S. or internationally, or to satisfy a requirement to live, work, or travel in a foreign country (i.e., police certificate, letter of good conduct, criminal history background, etc.).
Go here: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So indeed, you can run a criminal background check on yourself, (I did not know this; thanks Spanky!) and if you had any dealings with the law in the past, it might be a good idea to do so to make sure that there is not erroneous information on record. The FBI is a bureacracy like any other, makes mistakes, and if you have had any dealings with them or any other law enforcement agency, good or bad, I can see where it would be wise to make sure the record is at least correct. I have seen people in the military have problems when erroneous info appeared in their records, and it can be quite a pain to get it corrected.

But to answer his original question: I do not know if a NICS check and a "background check" are the same. I suspect they are not identical, but contain some of the same data, since the purpose of a NICS check is to flag any disqualifying items, like felony convictions. I would suspect a background check contains more info, but that is only speculation.

Not speculation, I'm sure you're correct. This was nothing more than a "check your files" effort here, which is not at all consistent with a true background check/investigation, and is probably more consistent with a NICS check. I really can't see a situation (unless I had a specific reason to be concerned) when I would ask for this type of report.

I'll be happy to give you some advice, Spanky, as you request, and I trust it will be a "helpful reply."

When I read your first post, which started all of this, along with the one I quote just above, I conclude that you do not have a CHL, and most likely have never had one. Then follows your confession that you have been carrying illegally for 15 years. On this forum "carrying" means carrying a concealed handgun outside one's home, and it certainly appears to me that you are using the word that way as well. I await your clarification should there be any.

In view of your attitude here and your blatant and proud apparent admission of 15 years of criminality, bragging about it, I would think that it is unlikely that you will ever have a CHL, particularly should your admission here come to the attention of the appropriate authorities.

While I have no interest in your "dirty laundry," I will assure you that the authorities, when looking at your background, will be interested.

I will go further and say that in my opinion, if I properly understand your own posts, you should not ever hold a CHL, and that if you ever did you would besmirch the reputation of the men and women who hold them deservedly. You will find them on this forum.

If I misunderstand the situation please be so kind to clarify it for me.

Elmo

PS: Now for the "advice." I have often said that one should put nothing on the Internet that he does not want the whole world to see. Your post is perhaps a classic example.
