SPAMMERS

Post by Oldgringo »

:mad5 Somehow, the SPAMMERS have got me. Every morning, I awake to 12-24 spam messages in my inbox. I've downloaded a Spam Blocker that collects them so that I can dump 'em but that doesn't stop 'em from coming.

Short of changing my e-mail addy, is there anything that can be done to stop this invasion of my privacy? I feel so violated.

There is nothing (I know of) that you can do to stop them from coming, unless your ISP has some sort of spam blocking program to stop them before they get to you.

Here is a link to one of the best spam blockers I've ever used. It may take a little time to "train", but it learns and improves itself as it goes.

What kind of messages are they? Do they look like they are coming from someone that you know?

I have had well-meaning but not very tech-savvy people get their PCs infected with viruses, and then I get spam that appears to be from them or other people in their address book.

Getting a dozen a day is not a big deal at all. If it's just the normal get-rich-quick and Viagra spam, your ISP should get it under control in a few days.

I also use MailWasher Pro. I can manually delete the few that it does not identify as spam. It is well worth the $25 or whatever.

I've used the same email address for years and if I get 12 to 24 spam messages an hour I consider it to be a slow day. I can open a report to check my spam levels, like yesterday I received 761 spam messages that never made it to my inbox and one that did. However I tend not to notice because my server identifies and marks it as spam, then my email client checks it again and files it in the correct location. A good filter is the only way to go once the spammers get your address. BTW, yesterday was a slow day for my spam filter, last week it filtered an average of 1327 spam messages per day.

Thanks guys.

I'm using Spamfighter (free version) and it's doing a pretty good job of sweeping the mail and putting the spam in a folder for one stroke deletion.

My spam is coming from unknown sources promoting everything from Airline Tickets to Viagra. Some AH has sold my addy. I have an AOL addy that I don't use and I'll look into some others for casual surfing use.

Nope because you were still using snail mail back then. With the benefit of modern technology comes the curse of modern technology.

A bad day of e-mail spam is 100 times better than no e-mail. I get political cartoons from 4-6 different people and get to laugh myself silly most mornings when I sit down the the computer. It is a great way to start the day. Humor can make our current political climate a little easier to take.

I've converted all but my City water bill to e-mail or website. One of these days they, too, will become part of the 21st century. If you want to talk about spam, you should see what's left in my US postal mailbox. I've cut that down a lot by opting out of many groups and aggressively using the post paid envelopes that the paper spam organizations use when they solicit me to return the advertisements of other organizations. A couple of cycles of that and the paper barrage stops. It is same that we cannot do the same with the e-mail spammers.

All my web hosting clients get free email accounts with their domain hosting. Our mail server runs Spam Assassin, and spam is virtually totally eliminated. Occasionally, something gets through, but is is easy to teach spam assassin that this is spam, and then it stops it from then on.

I agree I run SA on my server and on my desktop and notebook PCs, works like a champ and thanks to a little scripting magic I get some nice reports as well.

I have several account and most of them get heavily spammed. And I get lots of Spam. The most anoying is when someone uses my email address on a list. Although technically not spam it tends to get me on bulk emailing like action committees, and joke lists.
I have "Liberty at gmail" which tends to collect tons of this stuff. People just use this email address to sign up for stuff. I was getting loads of stuff relating to a printing company. I politely asked many times to stop sending their invoices and other emails to me. It had no effect and I was ignored., Finally I sent a an email to all the recipients and all the emailers in full rant mode using lots of profanity and cussing, explaining how the lowlifes should take me off their contact lists and and how the companies involved were unprofessional. the whole bit.
I had sent about 20 emails before asking them to stop. That is the one that did it. Allt he emails stopped.
sometimes lots of artful offencive cussing is more effective than polite talk.
