Question about CHL on campus...

Post by jcarp02 »

I know many people were hopeful that the state of Texas would be able to pass a law allowing concealed carry on college campuses. Does this shooting in AZ throw a wrench in that? I ordered a pistol last week and picked it up today. The guy told me that it was tougher to get than normal because I ordered it the day before the shooting. Just wondering if this will have any other implications on handgun legislation this year.

I don't think the basic argument has changed.

A mentally-unbalanced person has caused great harm to others. The "others" deserve the right to defend themselves.

The legislators who are pro-self defense are still pro-self defense. Their constituents who support expanding CHL rights still support expanding CHL rights.

The anti-gunners will try to keep this tragedy in the news as long as they can. I don't see it having a negative impact on campus-carry since the only lesson to be learned form this event is that "bad guys" shoot unarmed good guys.

You are absolutely right on both points.

I work for UH main and I am surprised that there is almost no talk about Carry on Campus. Maybe they just know it's coming and they can't do anything about it. A bunch of us here are looking forward to the law and are making arrangements for the law to pass and take effect.
There are many here who screamed about it in 2009 but not a peep this time. :confused5

I guess I just see the left trying to use this tragedy to their advantage to force stricter gun laws. I'm not so much worried about the state of Texas, but I was wondering if the federal government could do something to hinder the state's progress of CHL laws.

JMPHO - However I am so greatful to the gentleman that tackled the gunman - carrying CCW, took safety off and prepared to draw, but instead took the guy down. Not that I don't think the guy "just needed shootin'", but because it showed that CHL-ers are not just always out to "light-'em-up!" I think this will carry some weight as well.

If they infringe upon States Rights tooooo much .... they won't get re-elected ... I think the mid term elections helped us immensely, and I think THOSE elected know why they won ... so I'm a lot less worried than if it had gone the other way ... that's the importance of voting.
