Stephen Hunter: In defense of high-cap mags

Unfortunately, most people have rigid beliefs (wherever those beliefs come from) and then find "facts" and arguments to justify their beliefs.

I haven't paid much attention to the noise surrounding this particular issue, but I have heard or seen more than one commentator who is convinced that if Jared Loughner could not have legally acquired a 33-round magazine, he would have had to resort to whipping his victims with a frozen mackerel or maybe even limp spaghetti.

It would never have occurred to him (because he was nuts) to steal a truck and drive into the crowd.

...well, that secret method's out now!!! Seriously...no law can prevent mayhem...but if they'd enforce the ones that punish it, there'd be a lot less of it...that's our problem, we worry more about if the poor perp had to wear diapers without yellow duckies on them as a baby than the rights/suffering of his victims....this one could have been red flagged if his Mama hadn't worked where she did...they handled all the signals in his history wrong and look what it cost innocent people...it's not the mags they need to be attacking here, but the folks who didn't let the system work to put a red flag on him in the NICS check...
...glad to see any open, fair reporting of gun situations...this one makes sense to someone who knows little about guns...and , if their mind is not already calcified, might help....now I gotta go look up vitiates...beeeeeeeeeeg word of the day...

The threat of punishment is no deterrent at all to a lunatic who intends to go down in flames or to an impulsive minor who cannot think of consequences half a minute in the future.

This guy would have killed and injured people unless he was confined, and our current so-called mental health system rarely confines people until they already have harmed someone.

People who can't legally buy firearms manage to get them all the time—like the thousands of minors, convicted felons, and illegal aliens who commit crimes every year.

People who can't get firearms at all (in some other countries) use knives, other tools, vehicles, improvised bombs, and poison (Tylenol, anyone?).

...agree on that which you posted...they'll do it with a stick if they lose their rational function....but this guy's Mama working for the locals caused him to be handled with kid gloves...things were played down and let go that kept the system from reporting him and his actions...so either having him evaluated, confined, or flagged in NICS couldn't happen....but these people will scream loudly for the government to "do something"...which, loosely interpreted, will mean put more restrictions on you and me...which still won't solve the problem....

Thanks for posting this excellent article!

Stephen Hunter is one of my favorite authors. The fact that he was employed by the Washington Post for years as their film and book critic will have weight with a lot of people on the East coast. The article was well written, no surprise there, and covered some well thought-out points that just might resonate with some who have not come down on either side of the mag ban.

It appeals to a wider audience than the “You’re Stupid” argument.
