Summary in case link goes dead:

Man and wife watching TV. Hubby has pistol stashed by chair.

Driveway alert goes off. Hubby goes to front door -- without gun.

Thugs burst in and tackle him, gun to head. He breaks away and runs for his "gun case". Thugs shoot. Husband goes down with wound to femoral artery.

Wife hated guns ever since her father died in accidental shooting, but she grabs the gun by husband's chair.

She tries to shoot -- but she doesn't know how to operate the safety (or safeties).

Thugs grab safe with a minor coin collection and flee.

Husband dies a day later.

Thugs are caught. Wife is now a good witness.

Couple was targeted by someone related to the wife by marriage.

Where do we start? Never open the door without knowing who is on the other side. Should have owned a glock - point and squeeze.

...routine kills...how many times can we hear it and still think "Oh, not this time...it's OK"
...should have become familiar with any weapon accessible for instant defense...or it's just a blunt instrument...what a horrible price to pay...
