China: Where did this come from?

Post by seamusTX »

In China (large country in east Asia) a man went to a hospital complaining of an intense headache.

Physicians found a four-inch-long knife blade embedded in the man's skull. He had been stabbed by a robber four years earlier, but somehow was unaware of the injury.

Wasn't there a story like this in the U.S. where a guy got stabbed in the head by his wife?

I can see where that might cause a headache and perhaps even some blurred vision.

I wonder if he described the headache as a sharp pain?

The brain has no pain receptors. People can have quite severe brain injuries without knowing that something is wrong, or just having a vague notion that all is not well.

Also people often "blank out" trauma such as being shot or stabbed.

The New York Daily News article that I linked to has further links to similar bizarre stories. A woman had a pair of scissors in her abdomen that emerged through her navel after a coughing fit.

I think that I may have met a few of these people.

While brain injuries can be a source of amusement, they really are a serious business. People who have strokes often don't realize that anything is wrong, even when they can't see out of one eye or use one hand.

In a previous career I wrote about these issues. I have no specialized education in the field.

Quite serious indeed! I was diagnosed to have had a TIA (mini-stroke) the day that the Columbia blew up literally over our heads. I knew something had happened and underwent carotid artery surgery within a week of the event. There's nothing funny about a stroke.

That said, I have met more than a few people who didn't know what was going on.

Did you see the video about the reporter who had some trouble speaking while on the air. At first, many people thought it was a stroke. I read today that it was a migraine.
