The above link describes the battle actions and some heros of the 761st Tank Battalion,
aka "The Black Panthers". This was a black unit that fought in Europe.
One of their black officers was taking a bus from Fort Hood (Killeen, TX) to Belton, TX
and refused to ride in the back of the bus.
A court martial proceeding against him for this infraction did not result in a conviction.

In the European theater there was a group of black P-51 Mustang pilots that were uniquely identified
by the red tails on their planes. They gained quite a reputation for successfully protecting
the bombers they accompanied.
