In Houston Saturday a 15-year-old girl was fatally shot when a boy was showing off a weapon to a group of teens in the 4900 block of Alvin Street (near 288 and Bellfort) at 12:55 a.m.
The teens initially told police that the girl was the victim of a drive-by shooting, but their story broke down under questioning.
Charges are expected to be filed against the minor who was handling the weapon. (This of course will change nothing other than increasing the case load of the "juvenile justice system" by one "yute" who no doubt will go on to become a productive law-abiding citizen.)
No information is available about the source of the weapon. It was not the property of the boy's parents.

Fear, anger, hatred, and greed. The devil's all-you-can-eat buffet.

That's very sad. Knowledge about firearms at an early age could have prevented this tragedy.

You reckon a little parental guidance would have helped avoid the incident? What is a 15 year old girl doing on the street at 5 minutes past midnight?7075-T7 wrote:That's very sad. Knowledge about firearms at an early age could have prevented this tragedy.

Since it was originally a drive by shooting the gun disappeared after the killing. No one has said if it was a revolver or a semi-automatic. I don't know if it was recovered.
The girl in question, apparently wanted the gun put away, as she was concerned some one was going to get hurt. I believe the kids were in front of her house.
It was not her boyfriends gun, but he was handling it. Apparently part of the handling of the gun was cocking the hammer. So to put it away, it was decided to decock the hammer. During this operation the boyfriend who was doing this, fired the gun which was pointed at the girlfriend.
This all just makes me want to scream.
The parents of the dead girl did not like the boy friend, and did not want their daughter to see him. They were asleep at the time. Thus maybe the reason for the late hour of the meeting.
Seems to me a simple one hour gun safety course should be part of every child's normal school curriculum as this would have hopefully prevented this, unless of course the boy friend was murdering his girlfriend and this was all just a story made up after the fact, kind of like the original, it was a drive by shooting story.

Here are some more details. The ages are not quite the same as originally reported, but all concerned were minors. Obviously they could not legally possess a handgun or ammunition for a handgun on a city street in the middle of the night.

I recall a story a while back where some parent had fantods over the Eddie Eagle program because it would traumatize his or her child. (Eddie Eagle does not use real or replica firearms.)

Firearms safety education would run counter to the effort to demonize firearms as untouchable, evil things that jump up and kill people without provocation.Seems to me a simple one hour gun safety course should be part of every child's normal school curriculum as this would have hopefully prevented this ...
