Shots fired in my neighborhood

Post by Embalmo »

Guys,

Last night about 10:30 I heard "Pop (pause) pop pop pop pop pop." frighteningly close to my front door while me and my wife were watching TV. I immediately shouted to my wife to run to the hallway (no windows) and then shouted to our son to calmly and quickly get down from his bed and join us in the hallway.  I called 911 and told them to have the officer knock and identify himself at the door. We all stayed in the hallway until the officer knocked.

When the officer arrived, He told us that there were multiple calls all over the neighborhood and they would be patrolling the area for likely long time.

We've never experienced anything like this in our neighborhood in the 8 years that we've live here, but I had my daily carry, an extra magazine and my phone on my person when we had to dart to a safe location in the house.  I think I've just proven that it's never a good idea to put your phone and gun away when you walk into you're house no matter how the neighborhood is.

I went to the street to get my mail 2 days ago and a visitor of neighbor's saw my pistol I wear in my shorts inside the house and said "You scared?" I replied nope, them rattlesnakes in my back yard better be though, I wear this one inside the house, if I was scared, I'dda brung the shotgun to get my mail from the mailbox.
We both laughed.

My "safreroom" is a center of the house bathroom I remodeled in 2007 with studs every 6 inches instead of 18 inches, with the thickest Hardiboard cement board and real mortar for thick tile instead of glue holding up the tiles. I mean it isn't Kevlar lined, but it's better than nothing.

Why do I have this funny feeling you live close to me. I ask because I do and my wife and I heard those same shots last night at the time you mentioned. Stop by and say Hi sometime.

Y'all need to move to Granite Shoals, not much farther, 18 city parks, 16 are on Lake LBJ, several boat launches constant level and fishing is good (White Bass at night now) .... crazies haven't found it yet. And it's easier to spell than phflugieville (just kiddin') :smilelol5:

Hmm...my safe spot is where I keep all the guns that aren't strategically placed elsewhere. Partly so I can take my time deciding what I want to use, rather than the last time something startled me and I just started grabbing guns. FWIW, it's not really practical to go clear the garage with a pistol in each hand, another one in your waistband, and a shotgun on a sling; you're out of hands for the flashlight and/or phone.

I'm reading all this, look at eureka's post, then look at OP's location and see Pflugerville...Whoops, I'm in this town, too.

Where about was this? Pflugerville definitely has its sketchy areas with a lot of low-income places taking in a huge portion of the population. Crime is too high for a mid-sized town that seemingly has a cop for every third corner. From those Highschool kids that shot a clerk downtown, to 'gang-banger' wanna-be's (probably what was going on last night), to the very recent drug bust this week...getting worse.

Ahhh Pflugerville. Lived there, on one of the sketchy streets no less my very first year in Texas.

In fact, the very first DAY in the house, some dude walked up and started banging on the door looking for someone. Honest mistake when the house had been vacant for months??? I didn't open the door and told them they have the wrong house. Might have been nothing, no one ever knocked on our door at night again in the year we lived there, but that was strange.

Stay safe!

I was coming home from the Fry's in Plano one night about 1.5 - 2 years ago and heard the same thing as I was driving past that eyeglasses store at the northern end of the northeast corner of 75 & Plano Pkwy. Very scary stuff. In fact, that's probably why I got my first gun (hard to say for sure... the incident and my purchase were maybe eight months apart). Anyway, I'm so glad you & your family weren't hurt!

scary stuff. I used to live in a pretty bad neighborhood on the NE side of my city right behind a so called "projects" establishment. Gun shots were not uncommon thing. My street was pretty quiet but the rest of the area was bad. A few years ago, one of my brothers old high school classmate's dad was murdered in his front yard. That was two streets over from where I used to live. Then the first week I moved into my new apartment there was the whole "shotgun incident" that happend right in front of me. It seems no where is exempt from bad things these days.

This is nothing new at all in my north east neighborhood in Houston.
In fact just last night while I was in bed someone cut loose several streets away with a magazine from an unknown caliber pistol.
I had a friend who moved to New Jersey a few years back and he was in town and stopped by for about an hour to visit with me.
While we were saying our good byes in the driveway the same thing happened .
It really shook him up and he seemed flabbergasted with my response or better put lack of.
It happens all the time around here.

I've heard something similar on occasion in our neighborhood in the evenings.... husband always tells me it's just the neighborhood kids setting off some fireworks. :headscratch

(fireworks are illegal within city limits also, partly because of the fire hazard)

All guns have at least two safeties. One's digital, one's cognitive. In other words - keep the digit off the trigger until ready to fire, and THINK. Some guns also have mechanical safeties on top of those. But if the first two don't work, the mechanical ones aren't guaranteed. - me

Fireworks and gunshots sound very different to my ears.

Glad to hear that you and your family are ok.

Guys I live in the heart of the last great seaside slum, yes that wonderful tourist attraction called Galveston. Been about two weeks since the last gunfire within earshot of my residence. This one was by far the closest I've experienced. I had the windows open enjoying the nice weather and I hear a string of three shots that were close enough to make me drop my lunch and head for cover. Talked to the Police when they showed up and from the reports it was associated with my thug type neighbors about three houses down the street. Of course they didn't hear a thing or notice the car that left the area in a quick manner about a minute after the shots  . Police could not do anything but file a report.
