Happy 175th birthday Lone Star!

March 2, 1836 - March 2, 2011.

A leader is someone who helps improve the lives of other people or improve the system they live under.

All new states are invested, more or less, by a class of noisy, second-rate men who are always in favor of rash and extreme measures, but Texas was absolutely overrun by such men.

I am aware that in presenting myself as the advocate of the Indians and their rights, I shall stand very much alone.

I would give no thought of what the world might say of me, if I could only transmit to posterity the reputation of an honest man.

I would not be gotten into a schoolhouse until I was eight years old. Nor did I accomplish much after I started. I doubt if I had gone to school six months in all when my father died. I was fourteen at the time.
In the name of the constitution of Texas, which has been trampled upon, I refuse to take this oath. I love Texas too well to bring civil strife and bloodshed upon her.

Remember that whatever may be said by a lady or her friends, it is not part of conduct of a gallant or generous man to take up arms against a woman.

Texas has yet to learn submission to any oppression, come from what source it may.

Texas will again lift it's head and stand among the nations. It ought to do so, for no country upon the globe can compare with it in natural advantages.

Texas, to be respected must be polite. Santa Anna living, can be of incalculable benefit to Texas; Santa Anna dead, would just be another dead Mexican.

The benefits of education and of useful knowledge, generally diffused through a community, are essential to the preservation of a free government.

Whether his policy was right or wrong, he built up the glory of the nation.

All the blue quotes above: Sam Houston, 1793-1863

Be always sure you are right - then go ahead.

Fame is like a shaved pig with a greased tail, and it is only after it has slipped through the hands of some thousands, that some fellow, by mere chance, holds on to it!

Heaven knows that I have done all that a mortal could do, to save the people, and the failure was not my fault, but the fault of others.

I have always supported measures and principles and not men.

I have suffered my self to be politically sacrificed to save my country from ruin and disgrace and if I am never again elected I will have the gratification to know that I have done my duty.

I would rather be beaten, and be a man, than to be elected and be a little puppy dog.

I would rather be politically dead than hypocritically immortalized.

If one man in the country could take all the money, what was the use of passing any bills about it?

It was expected of me that I was to bow to the name of Andrew Jackson... even at the expense of my conscience and judgement. such a thing was new to me, and a total stranger to my principles.

Let your tongue speak what your heart thinks.

Look at my arms, you will find no party hand-cuff on them.

The enemy fought with savage fury, and met death with all its horrors, without shrinking or complaining: not one asked to be spared, but fought as long as they could stand or sit.

The party in power, like Jonah's gourd, grew up quickly, and will quickly fall.

Throughout the day no time for memorandums now. Go ahead! Liberty and independence forever.

We have the right as individuals to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right to appropriate a dollar of the public money.

We must not permit our respect for the dead or our sympathy for the living to lead us into an act of injustice to the balance of the living.

You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas.

All the red quotes above are from Davy Crockett, 1786-1836.

I've always wanted March 2 to be a State offices, schools closed, fireworks holiday.

The Country, Republic of Texas, Independence Day was locally more important than that one where 13 states in some other country far far away declared their independence, yet more Texans know about July 4th when it had no affect on us at all at that time. Who cares about Somalia's Independence day or United States Independence from England day ... we weren't part of either of those when those events occurred. (Not discounting them really, but Texas should give equal honor as we do for those 13 States up North somewhere who get parties for July 4th which formed some country of which we were not a part at the time.)

Happy Texas Independence Day Y'all! :txflag:

I was disappointed once again this year that the local tv news stations didn't lead with the fact that today is Texas Independece Day. I know I shouldn't be but I just keep hoping one year they will. Perhaps 25 years from now they will when its 200 years since that day in Washington, Texas!

At one time so was San Jacinto Day.

Yup. Sam Houston and Audie Murphy. When Jesus comes back and if they're part of the angelic multitude, I wouldn't want to mess with that... :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag: :txflag:

Lead from the front.

And freedom is what America means to the world.

They were singing in French, but the melody was freedom and any American could understand that.
