Howdy,

First post around here, been reading the boards for awhile now. There's a wealth of great info on here!

Put in an order for one of these the other day. $300 Police Magnum (used). I'm excited to see how bad the finish is beat up and how the all-steel configuration compares to my 870 express. IMO the 870 is as close as perfection as you can get in a scattergun and the Police model has a slew of benefits.

Do you have any affiliation with J&G Sales in Arizona?
(Might be good to put a disclaimer, because some first time posters just join to spam some place or another)
Generally if I can't find what I need in Texas, I order from AZ, and boycott Commiefornia, New York etc..

Here's an 870, the folder was made by Butler Creek, I haven't seen this foregrip for sale anywhere in years though. It allowed a person to operate it even if a hand is injured.

Got a call from my FFL and picked it up! The wood is banged up pretty nicely, a few scratches on the receiver too. Tool not a jewel!

No corrosion on interior. Minimal on the outside. I'm very pleased with the gun and the 18" barrel is very short. Only a couple inches longer than my 16" ar fully collapsed.

Date code on the barrel is from 1977, and NO ridiculous j lock on the safety

I'll try to get some pictures up if y'all are interested after I get it cleaned up.

Mine is a 1980s 870, that's the only reason I haven't sold it and gone to the Stainless Marine model. I like the older ones, notice the extended mag tube etc. I fixed up several of those for Pasadena Police back then. Newer ones have some dimples making things more difficult I believe.

I had a good experience with them as well. Shipped quickly and looks very close to the one in the picture on their site.

Time to get some 00 buck and see how it patterns.

Lots of 'character' :-) Most of that wood will clean up with a good sanding, a few coats of Formby's tung oil finish (got mine at Lowe's) with dried coats smoothed out with fine wire wool. I refinished my Beretta 391 woodwork in this manner and found it immensely satisfying and turned out much better I ever imagined it would. Seriously, a couple of evenings work would do wonders.

Just a note that, for most, carrying the shells in the saddle primer-side down is a better option. If they're primer-side up, getting to them and loading with your off-hand wastes a lot of movement.

And good-on ya for choosing a Remmy. The 870 is my basic shotgun of choice.

Thanks for the wood advice, I might have to try that out sometime. I'm tempted to finish up the stock real good and run some kind of paint/finish black on the steel. She would look clean.

But then again I kind of like it how it is.

I really like that Shotgun. I would love to have an older gun like that because of the character and history involved. I would say the 870 is the American version of the AK as far as reliability. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm getting tired..

I might have missed it if you covered this, but I would definitely change out the mag spring and the carrier dog follower spring. Instructions on how to change out the carrier spring are located at:

I am only a satisfied customer and it is a cheap way to make sure your beautiful old P 870 remains reliable.

I've seen the mag spring, it looks in pretty rough shape. Is this due to the use or the specific model?

On a side note it runs great
