Spikes Tactical AR 15

Post by ddstuder »

What do the experts say about Spike's? I can not find any bad press for these guys. Does anyone have one? If so, how do you like it?

I have the AR bug and was looking at these. Found them local at a good price.

I'm no expert, but I shoot a lot. IMO, Spikes is comparable to CMMG, Rock River, Stag and Bushmaster. They aren’t the best but they aren’t the worst. If all you plan on doing with your rifle is occasional target practice or “homeland defense” gun, you will be very satisfied. As of today's date, you should be able to find complete rifles of this quality for $600-$800.

If you plan on firing your rifle frequently including competition, matches or duty purposes, I would suggest a fully mil-spec brand such as Colt or BCM. $900-$1200

Spikes is good quality without being top tier($1500/2500) . Like stated above comparable to RRA, CMMG, Stag, or Daniel Defense. Top tier would be LaRue, Noveske, LMT, POF. I personally don't think the Colt is any better in this day and age with the popularity of the platform now. Soooo many competitors that all make great rifles I really think the Colt gouge is on price alone.

I did order 2 PMags and 3 steel ones (only $10 each on Brownells), but I decided on the Magpul MBUS folding rear sight. Is the LMT a better sight? It is twice the price of the MBUS.
I have 0 experience with AR's so I am open to any suggestions and criticisms.

Thank you.

I get to pick her up today!!! :woohoo

For my purposes (shooting paper occasionally) I love my MBUS.
The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere. -Thomas Jefferson

I've been using an Arms#40 flip-up BUIS for years, and I loved it, but there is no adjustment for elevation, only windage. So, after trying the LMT rear sight, I felt it was time to switch. I was worried that the LMT wouldn't co-witness well (align with optics w/o blocking view) but I honestly don't even notice it when using my EOTech.

They are online for $100 but you can find them slightly used (take-offs) in the equipment exchange section of ar15.com for about $50.

You'll be fine with either... its all personal preference. MAGPUL is an awesome company with excellent products.

The MAgpul MBUS is not as heavy duty as some other b/c it is made of plastic. Not to say its a bad choice its just not as tough. I have an MBUS on the rear of one of my rifles, but it came on there and will be replaced soon with a TROY or Daniel Defense rear sight. Those two are just my preferences. I think the Spikes is a great rifle and you should be very happy with it.

I use a Matech flip-up BUIS. It has indexed adjustments for elevation at marked distances. Windage adjustment is done with an allen wrench.

I would put BCM in the tier 1 category also.

Well I took the Spikes out Saturday.
I shot 400 total rounds through it without any major issues. I sighted in the EOTech and MBUS. I lubed it up good and shot several mags through it. After about 250-275 rounds, It had trouble chambering the first round in a new mag. I had some cheap steel mags from Brownells, and a couple Magpul PMags. I noticed this problem only happened on the steel mags (PMags worked fine). I dropped out the bolt and wiped it off, and then sprayed it down good with Rem-Oil. After doing this, It would chamber a new mag just fine.

All in all, I am very pleased with this rifle! Now I just need to buy more ammo! :fire :anamatedbanana
