Found Film Recounts B-29 Rescue 66 Years Ago

Post by TxD »

Fascinating film of airman from B29 "City of Galveston" rescued by submarine.

"Vanden Heuvel, now 85, explained he had volunteered for the bombing mission aboard the B-29 City of Galveston, not his plane. It’s certainly a mission he will never forget."

"The officer who shot the film stored it away and 65 years later came across it. The found footage shows parachuting airmen, the airplane plunging into the ocean and exploding, plus the rescue of the airmen."

Wow, that is cool.

I am confused by one aspect of this whole film. I was under the impression that film that old, not properly stored and treated was liable to become decomposed and rather useless after any significant period of time (such as this).

I wonder what was done to prevent this, or is it simply an overstatement by those soliciting funds for Film Archives?

Fascinating stuff. Thank you for posting that up. Wild to see a fireball from something hitting the ocean!
