Help, I Need to Renew My CHL and I all screwed up.

Post by qwert35 »

First off Hello, and forgive my ignorance. My CHL expires in about a month and a half, and I ignorantly assumed that it would be as simple a renewing your driver's license plus the short renewal course.

Then I read somewhere that the DPS sends you a renewal packet. I never received such a packet probably because I have the incorrect address on my License. I've lived at about 5 different addresses in the past 4 years and just slipped my mind to update my information. Now I don't know what to do to receive my packet and get renewed in time. I'm also worried about my mistake of not updating my address. Can anyone tell me what I need to do? Thanks

Call DPS.. Tell them you recently moved..and your renewal is coming due..
They'll tell you what to do..

In the grand scheme of things, not a big deal.. IMO
Own up and get 'er done.

Someone will be along soon who made the same mistake and tell you exactly how it worked out.. but if it was me, I'd just call.

Also, you should update your drivers license (if necessary) to the correct address before applying, if possible.

(You do realize that not updating your CHL address within 30 days when you move is cause for suspension/revocation of your CHL, right?)

Thankyou. No excuses, it just slipped my mind. Do I any paperwork from the renewal packet, or do I just need to sign up for a renewal course, get the training form from the instructor and then mail it in? Can I take the renewal course while waiting for my updated license to come in.

:???: Do you mean take the course while waiting for the packet? I would think so.

there is no packet.

Sign up online. Fill out the paperwork online. Make appt. for fingerprints, if needed. Take the renewal course. Send in CHL-100 (from course) and any other documentation required as specified by information given you when you fill out paperwork online.

Take course while waiting for updated DRIVERS license? I would think so. But you should probably have the address changes in the DPS system before doing the online renewal application.
You CAN take the renewal course before starting the online app. if you wish.

Thanks for your help people. Ok, I'm gonna update my information later this week and then try and take the course in the next week or 2. I assume that the instructor will give me the training form that I need. Then I guess I just mail that in and I should be good i gues.

When you fill out the online application, you will be told what other documentation/forms you need to send in. Probably just the CHL-100 training form, and the "bar code" form you'll get from the online application process.

I have students call about this all the time.

Just fill out the renewal info online, find a renewal class, get your fingerprints, send it all in.....and wait for the post man to deliver the love to your house!

Click on the link below, then click on the "New Users" button at the bottow left. Then just do what it tells you to do.

Good luck!

Renewals don't need fingerprints anymore. Another step you can cross off the list.
