Bloomberg scolds nation for not standing up to gun lobby
Note that accompanying the article is a poll that that purportedly has 75% of respondents favoring a total ban on private ownership of all guns. Many of those commenting note the discrepancy between this claim and the fact that most of the comments following the article are pro-gun. Don't expect the anti-gun propaganda to let up any time soon.

Edited to add this:
Well, maybe that 75% does actually represent the wacky readership of the NY Daily News. Either there are more nut cases in NY than I realized or a large number of them are NY Daily News readers. I came across another article on the same site with another poll --this time about a kid defending himself against a bully. 75% of these liberal nut jobs don't want kids being bullied to fight back because they might hurt the bully. It's no wonder that people this nutty only want thugs to have guns.

Blah, Blah, Blah!!!"This is just no courage on the part of Americans to stand up and say 'Enough,'" Bloomberg said while joining members of Congress who support closing loopholes that allow criminals, drug abusers and the mentally ill to buy guns.
Notice the way the poll is worded. Nothing about the people having guns to battle the "fight against crime."
Should private ownership of guns be banned completely?
Yes, it would be a giant step forward in the fight against crime.
No, guns are too much a part of American culture and history.
I wish I had a pet bird. I could use the NY Daily News to line the bottom of the cage.

Someone should tell Bloomberg to shut up. His responsibility is New York City, not the rest of the country. Fix crime in your own city, Mayor, then you can preach to the rest of us.

"We already got guns, that pretty much trumps your poll"

On the NY Daily News site it may not have made any difference how they worded it, they may just have a bunch of nutty readers: they don't want people to fight back --see the link provided in the edit

I have a proposal for that blowhard. First you give up all of your guns, Mayor. Then you confiscate all the guns that your staff and entourage and security detachment have. Then you confiscate all the guns of your police department and other agencies that are armed. Then you confiscate all the remaining guns in New York City. If you live through all of that, we'll think about....no we won't. You're a fool and an idiot. Go live on an island somewhere and see if you can ban all guns there, you dolt.

Re: Bloomberg scolds nation for not standing up to gun lobby
The other day on the radio, I heard an estimate that 2 out of 5
American homes contain a firerarm. (which I thought was low)
So automatically we have 40% of Americans in favor of the 2A.
Throw in all those Americans who may not own a gun themselves,
but fully support the rest of us, and pro-2A sentiments are now held
by well over half of the US population.
Another poll has said that something like 78% of Americans do not
believe in piling on further useless gun control laws. Everything illegal
you can do with a gun is already illegal.
Bloomburg and your gun-grabbing ilk:
Stop ratcheting down 2A rights on those of us who use ours responsibly.
Rant off.

The odds are close, but I think he is probably more likely to shut up.baldeagle wrote:I have a proposal for that blowhard... First you give up all of your guns, Mayor. Then you confiscate all the guns that your staff and entourage and security detachment have...

If he was in office 50 years ago, I bet he would have scolded the nation for not standing up to MLK.
This will only hurt a little. What comes next, more so.

Re: Bloomberg scolds nation for not standing up to gun lobby
I just sent this letter to the Editor of the New York Daily News.
We'll see if they have the guts to publish it.Let me be among the first to scold Mayor Bloomberg in return for being a hypocritical busybody. The Mayor wants law abiding citizens to give up their guns because, he claims, it would make America safer. Yet the Mayor struts around the nation lecturing us with armed bodyguards at his side. Mayor, we will give up our guns if you will give up yours first. Lay down your arms now, Mayor. Fire all those armed bodyguards that follow you around. Disarm the NYPD. After all, you should set the example for all of us. If disarmament is the answer, then set the example, Mayor, and disarm now.
The greatest threat to tyranny is firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens. When a politician tells you he's for gun control, he doesn't mean all guns. He means your guns. Once he's disarmed you, he will feel a lot safer, and a lot more free to do to you whatever he thinks is best for you.
Our forefathers warned us about men like Mayor Bloomberg.
Thomas Jefferson wrote, "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
George Washington wrote, "The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."
Even Mahatma Ghandi, one of the greatest pacifists the world has ever known, wrote, "Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest."
History repeatedly shows us that disarmament is the precursor to tyranny. One need only to read Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' concurring opinion in McDonald v Chicago to realize that American politicians used disarmament to enslave and oppress black Americans in the South.
When blacks attempted to defend themselves and their families against the predations of southern racists, the southern governments disarmed them so they could not fight back. Time and time again the Republican Congress tried to pass laws to put an end to the tyranny, but the southern Democrats resisted vehemently. The Fourteenth Amendment was passed to ensure, in part, that blacks would have the same rights as every other citizen.
Amazingly, the Supreme Court even resisted granting the same rights to blacks that other citizens enjoyed daily. In a series of cases named the Slaughterhouse Cases, the Court sought to narrow the reach of the privileges and immunities clause as much as possible to deny blacks the rights that they deserved. In United States v Cruickshank the Court held "...that members of a white militia who had brutally murdered as many as 165 black Louisianians congregating outside a courthouse had not deprived the victims of their privileges as American citizens to peaceably assemble or to keep and bear arms."
It's hard not to conclude that the ultimate goal of Mayor Bloomberg is to turn the citizens of New York, and eventually of all America, into sheep doing the biding of almighty politicians who presume to know better than us what is best for us.
