Good article regarding the "Violence is never the answer" mentality regarding bullying, and the author equates this to the anti-gun movement's mentality.

This is a very well written article. I was bullied when I was younger. One time I took it to my parents and the school administrators and it got worse. We moved for other reasons shortly thereafter. At my new school I was being picked on by one of the strongest guys in my grade. He tried to hip throw me and I decided enough was enough. I choked him out right there so fast he had no idea what was happening. He tapped out and I had no problems after that other than an occasional name called. So I have first hand knowledge, yes sometimes violence is the answer.

I was picked on by a neighbor kid until I beat the snot out of him when we were about 5 or 6. He became one of my best friends after that.

I was bullied in public middle school... up until I fought back, and was given a ticket by a police officer for fighting in public. The most worthwhile community service I ever did

(Actually the only community service I've ever done, the rest is just volunteering.)

...policy here is that both involved in the fight get a ticket and suspended...I don't know what law the student defending himself is supposed to have broken, but I told my 3 sons if it happened, I'd fight it with them to the Supreme Court...for whatever good it would do...what on the street is self-defense is a crime in school???? I don't think so...two out...two months more to get the third graduated...hasn't come up...yet...

Many of the so called experts have no practical knowledge of the things that they write about. Theirs is all theoretical, education based opinion. Just because they read it from some other pompous jerk doesn't make it so.

They had the same policy in my high school - fight back against a bully and you will be punished. I didn't have enough support at home for that so I just took the abuse. We went to my high school reunion (30 years) and one of the bullies was there. He had the same attitude as he had in school and had made a wreck of his life because of it. It was poetic justice if I ever saw it

I was always told that if I EVER got in a fight, self defense or not, that I would never see the light of day again, to put it lightly. My parents were ignorant enough to believe that if I didn't respond to bullies then they wouldn't bully me. I never understood how they could say that seeing as how my dad was shipped across town to what was an all black school in GA when they started desegregating schools. It wasn't good for his health..

Is this not why we maintain our right to carry? To protect ourselves from the bullies that grow up to become career criminals?
Maybe these liberal experts should come out of hiding and take a look at the real world. Kind of like when my mother became the attendance secretary at a high school, it was the beginning of a whole new vision of the world to her.

Karma can be a great justifier in the end, but only if you live to see it.......

I had similar experiences at multiple schools where I was the new kid 16 times.

A lot of the time you don't even have to win, though that is better, just standing up to be counted earns respect.

I was bullied until I quit listening to my parents and teachers and fought back, instead of taking their advice to "ignore it". It can be pretty hard to ignore somebody slapping you on the back of the head while wearing a ring turned to the inside to make it hurt or jabbing you with a pencil. It is amazing what one or two low blows can do to discourage a bully. . .

When I was 13 I got KICKED OUT OF CHURCH for standing up to a bully...! And in retrospect, it was worth it.

The little bully-thug had it coming, he got it, message delivered loud and clear, I can only guess that he never touched anyone ever again after the beating I gave him, long story short is that I finally was fed up with him and it came to a boil on the Church bus while going to a Cleveland Indians game, the bus driver (this person was also the youth pastor) had to stop the bus and pull me off of him, I gave the thug right hook after right hook, he was just crying/screaming, of course, so was I, but with aggression. The conversation with the YP went something like this:

YP (youth pastor): WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?!?!?!?!

me: defending myself from a bully who just didn't stop, he's been acting this way for months....the last straw was when he took my glasses, look, I put up with being jabbed in the neck with a straightened paper clip, it hurt, but the glasses, well, that was it, he got what was coming to him....

YP: Well, you just should've told me, I'd have taken care of it...

me: No, that just would've made it worse, he won't touch me again.

YP: Well, we don't feel that you are a good influence here, you are not welcome back

me: Do you think I want to be here, especially with someone like you?

My parents were 100% behind me, we switched Churches. I kind of did want to go back though and make sure he didn't mess with anyone else. Every since then I've stood up FOR OTHER folks who got bullied, I have NO tolerance for it. It probably helped that I had a large growth spurt right about then too.

...being bullied had a lot to do with me choosing to be a cop...don't like to see little folks pushed around...and I lead real well, but don't push me...I was taught that strength, size, power, and authority are to be used to SERVE and PROTECT...not lord it over someone or intimidate them...I work with one of my best friends who developed an anti-bullying program used in a lot of Texas schools...he saw his son bullied to the point of despair...and did something about it...

I have always maintained “violence may not be the answer but it can be a useful part of the equation”.

As I see it, people want the police and military to “protect us, but don’t hurt anyone doing it”.

I got beat up a few times by bullies, but each time I made it hurt. After a while they took the attitude “I can beat him up, but I am not going to do it today” and they left me alone.

The idea of the kid defending himself getting punished just makes me want to upchuck.
