Want to try: 223 Match Ammo

Post by Beiruty »

I was not a happy camper to see my SIG 556 shooting wide spread shots at 100 yrd.

I was advised to try, match grade ammo:
As a start Prvi 75 gr BTHP Match is good rd to try at 50 cents/rd (online).

Do you recommed comparable rds at comparable price?

Do you have some match rds that you would like to sell? I would like to try some.

I got another idea: The best deal I saw online for Prvi 75 gr 223 Match is 200 rd for $102 shipped. I may not need all 200 rds, if someone would like to have some we can split it into 2. 100 rds for $51. If anyone interested, let me know.

I'm interested in splitting it if you order some. Where did you see that price? Palmetto state armory has it for eighty something before shipping. I've been wanting to try some in my recce build.

Beiruty, it really depends on the barrel twist rate of your Sig. My son's bull barreled RRA with a 1:8 twist shoots 75 and 77 grain ammo very well, but we also have 3 different ARs that have 1:9 twists, and they prefer 55-69 grain bullets, and they shoot the Sierra Matchking HPBT 69 grainers quite well. But the 75-77 grain bullets are too heavy to shoot well in those three rifles.

Secondly, I have no experience with the Prvi Partisan "Match" ammo in .223, but I have some experience with their .308 Match load, and all I can say is that, if that is what they call "Match," then I would hate to see what they call mass-produced. In a Remington 700 heavy barreled rifle that shoots .308 match ammo from Winchester, Federal, and Black Hills very well, the Prvi "Match" ammo didn't perform any better than straight up out of the box plinking ammo. I won't waste my money on it again.

For your rifle, I would recommend the Black Hills match ammo, in either a 68 or 69 grain bullet. I have bought it from Cabelas for about $36-$40 for a box of 50. That is more than your goal of 50¢ per round, but you just aren't going to get true "Match" ammo for that kind of price unless you reload it yourself. My .308 handloads run about 75¢ per round using unfired new brass, and it goes down to about half of that using fired brass. Savings for .223 will be commensurate.

You have a 1:7 twist ratio, so the heavier bullets should group better for you. You might want to give Black Hills 77gr MK BTHP a try. They are about $1 a round but if you want accuracy you will get what you pay for. I also like Black Hills 69gr MK-BTHP, they are a little lighter but my 1:7 bolt gun seems to like them fine.

Wideners.com. $87.5 for 200 rds and $13 for FedEx ground. PM me to work out the details. if there is better source, I will consider it.

:iagree:

If you want to try some pricey match-grade ammo that performs very well in a 1:8, give a look at the Lapua .223 69-grain HP boat tail. Goes for around a dollar per round.

Black Hills comes either as brand new or remanufactured. The remanufactured product is a little cheaper, but not by a huge amount; box of 50 68-grain match-grade can be had for around $33. Both perform well, but if you plan to reload 'em, I think I'd go ahead and pay the extra couple of bucks to start off with new brass.

Federal makes a very good, but expensive, product in their "Premium Gold Medal" line with a 69-grain Sierra MatchKing HP boat tail. It's about $28 to $30 for a box of 20.

Remington uses the same bullet in their "Premier Match Ammunition" product at about two bucks cheaper than the Federal. Cor-Bon also uses the bullet in their "Performance Match Ammunition" at about $18 per 20. I've shot only a couple of boxes of the Remington and Cor-Bon 'cause I've been pleased enough with the Federal and Black Hills to stick with those for match-grade purposes.

Just my two pennies...

My Sig 556 is 1:7. Here is a acurracy report for 1:7 (but not SIG 556):

Beiruty - You never did state how wide your "wide spread" groups are.

How accurate are you? Has anyone else shot your gun to see if they can hold better groups with your current ammo? IMO, the difference between .19" and .32" is not significant.

I was shooting cheap 20 cents/rd Russian Made Silver Bear 62 Gr BTHP. It should be 2"-3" at 100 yrd and I am sure I wasn't shooting better than that. It was my first time trying to zero my Nikon Monarch 2.5-10X50 and since I am zeroing. I was not sure if it's the wind, it is bullet or it is my hands that made the POI all over the place, I mean 2-3". I wanted to eliminate the rd first and use Match grade and try to zero my scope.

I should have kept the target and post it here. However, It wasn't a pleasant experience when I left the range, so no target was collected.

Once I get new Match grade bullets, I will go back to the range again and report.

I went to the top Gun shooting club and tried 60 rds of this ammo. All shot very well with no issues. However, at 100 yrd, the POI was 6" high when I started. We had gusting wind down the range. I had to keep adjusting the elev turret to get the POI dead center. I may have run out of adjustment at with 20 MOA Nikkon M-223 mounnt.

Once I had decent grouping around Bullseye, I switched to 200 yrds and I was hitting 4" small metalic plate fairly easily. When I switched to 300 yrd. I had hard time hitting 4" plate with persistent wind. The spotter was guiding that my bullets are landing 1-2" to the right of the target.

The rds where grouping very well. However, the POI was just high, stringing horizontally with few rd touching. I had last couple rds for last 5 rd string touching too. I would judge with this Ammo, my SIG is 1-2 MOA with Monarch 2.5-10X50 Nikon scope.

What I am worried about is if the scope is holding zero or not. Last time, I was shooting 62 gr Silver Bear, Today it was Prvi 75 gr Match BTHP. Or is it the bullet weight/velocity and the wind?
