AK barrel extension...source?
AK barrel extension...source?
Hopefully someone can help me. I have a project I would like to complete on an AK, but I need a barrel extension. Not just a long muzzle brake or flash hider, but an extension that will screw onto the threads on the end of the barrel, preferably 4-inch. The brake/hider will attach to that. I've looked around on line and the only company that I found (in North Carolina) has no secure website to purchase from...so, if anyone has any info about this, could you please let me know? Thanks in advance.
Re: AK barrel extension...source?
Does the extension need to be rifled or can it be 100% cosmetic like the fake silencers?
Re: AK barrel extension...source?
Thanks for the reply. I'm fine with it being smooth, it just needs to be threaded to properly align with the actual barrel. I don't want the rounds striking it unevenly or something like that and affecting the amount of accuracy an AK does have, ha ha.

I'm trying to understand the need for what you are asking for. Can you fill me in? Is your barrel too short to be legal?

Re: AK barrel extension...source?
The "AK" I bought is a rebuild of a Hungarian AMD-65 but with a fixed stock. The receiver and action is pretty good quality. I already replaced the stock, grip and handguard with a high-quality composite American-made set. That was pretty easy, though I had to do some minor fitting (it is an AK, ha ha). What I want to do now is replace the large (and loud, judging by the videos online) muzzle brake with a flash hider so it won't throw "fireballs" at the range. However, as you guessed, the barrel itself is too short to simply remove the brake and replace with the flash hider. I need a barrel extension with old Soviet standard threads to extend it out, then add the flash hider. And it must be all be welded together to make it a permanent part of the barrel (not easily removed by hand or simple tools). I will take it to a gunsmith to have the work done, so I keep it all legal. I just need a good source for the barrel extension. The company I found on-line didn't have the site "secure" for purchasing with my card...and in this day and age of hacking, certainly a no-go item. I appreciate any information someone may have for me.RECIT wrote:I'm trying to understand the need for what you are asking for. Can you fill me in? Is your barrel too short to be legal?
*Edited to clarify national origin of stock set*

I have an AMD-65 and you're right...that brake is VERY loud...Heartland Patriot wrote:

Re: AK barrel extension...source?
How long exactly is the barrel without the brake?
Re: AK barrel extension...source?
I'm not exactly certain. I have NOT removed the muzzle brake and would not remove the brake myself. I will only allow an authorized gunsmith to do so. WITH the muzzle brake (which is currently pinned and welded AS IT CAME FROM THE MANUFACTURER as required by the fine folks at the ATF) the entire barrel length is correct and legal. I believe the flash hider I was looking at is long enough to work with a two inch extension once assembled and welded to the barrel and extension by an authorized gunsmith (excluding the threaded parts on each end), but I'd be a lot happier with a four-inch extension. That way, no one has to get out the tape measure. Like I said, I want everything to remain legal. If I cannot get the right parts, it will simply stay the way it is...and they'll have to make some room on each side for me at the range, ha ha.Carry-a-Kimber wrote:How long exactly is the barrel without the brake?

Re: AK barrel extension...source?
The reason I ask is because I have a YHM QD Phantom Flash Hider on my AK and it is 3 5/8" long. If your barrel is longer than 12 3/8'' you could just have one of those welded on and you could forgo the barrel extension. Standard AMD barrel is 317mm which is ~12.5 inches so you would only be an 8th short, you could just have a quarter inch spacer put in to be at 16.25 and be legal by a quarter inch. No reason to have it any longer than need be IMHO.Heartland Patriot wrote:I'm not exactly certain. I have NOT removed the muzzle brake and would not remove the brake myself. @Carry-a-Kimber:
The Phantom flashhider you mentioned is the exact one I was thinking of installing. I'll try to take a more accurate measurement from the breech end of the barrel to where it looks like the barrel ends and the muzzle brake begins. My apologies for the last wordy reply, but I don't want to give anyone "special" the impression that I would do anything improper. With some of the things in the news these days, best not to take any chances. Thank you for the information.

I did see these guys site...and it is indeed exactly what I am looking for...however, when I went to purchase it, the page didn't have a "lock symbol" to show it is a secured transaction...and with hackers these days, I don't trust using my card on an unsecure site...I emailed them about it, but no reply.RECIT wrote:AdioSS wrote:That could be what the OP is looking for...AdioSS wrote:something like this?
