IMO, it is down right criminal to claim that violence is NEVER the answer, when sometimes violence is the ONLY answer.

...policy here is that both involved in the fight get a ticket and suspended...I don't know what law the student defending himself is supposed to have broken, but I told my 3 sons if it happened, I'd fight it with them to the Supreme Court...for whatever good it would do...what on the street is self-defense is a crime in school???? I don't think so...two out...two months more to get the third graduated...hasn't come up...yet...

Same policy in my boys' school. Same response from me. If you have to defend yourself, do so. I will go to the wall to support them in protecting themselves. If, on the other hand, I find out they instigated the situation, or elevated it with wisecracks, name calling, and stuff like that, there will be some different issues altogether. Quite often aggression can be negated/reduced by proper application of common sense.

Bottom line is, I'm fine and supportive of my boys defending themselves, but they'd better not be the aggressor/instigator.

Had a kid bullying me constantly when I was in the third grade. One day I jumped in the middle of a little physical disagreement between his older brother and my older brother. Beat up my bully's OLDER BROTHER. Never really had a problem with that kid after that......

My son was always large for his age (6' 240 today at age 21), and he has a fairly placid temperament. It's amazing to me how many big kids get picked on. He has always been strong as an ox, so we were a little afraid of what he might do to someone in a fight. Foolishly, up until he was about ten, we forbade him to fight - but I was bullied as a young boy too, and I was only repeating the parenting my parents taught me. We finally green lighted him to defend himself (but big trouble if he started it). It wasn't long before he trashed a couple of kids who had it coming. End of problem. Lesson learned all the way around.

I was bullied in public middle school... up until I fought back, and was given a ticket by a police officer for fighting in public. The most worthwhile community service I ever did

(Actually the only community service I've ever done, the rest is just volunteering.)

Many of the so called experts have no practical knowledge of the things that they write about. Theirs is all theoretical, education based opinion. Just because they read it from some other pompous jerk doesn't make it so.

They had the same policy in my high school - fight back against a bully and you will be punished. I didn't have enough support at home for that so I just took the abuse. We went to my high school reunion (30 years) and one of the bullies was there. He had the same attitude as he had in school and had made a wreck of his life because of it. It was poetic justice if I ever saw it

Back in the 50's my much older brother beat up a bully who attacked him in high school. This was in California, before it became a People's Republic. The school principal drove my brother home from school. He complimented my parents on their good son and told them my brother had done the school a favor, and he'd driven him home so the bully's friends couldn't jump him on his walk. My brother never had any more problems with this bully or his friends. Fast forward to when I was in junior high in California --rampant bullying, not safe to use the restrooms, locker searches, fights, trash can fires, students doing drugs on campus; and yep, if you were attacked and fought back, you got suspended along with your attacker. The collectivists hate it when people refuse to be a victim --it undermines their whole basis for exerting their power and control.
