My dad has managed to have two checks, years apart from each other, stolen out of the mailbox and washed and altered for a much higher amount.

That may be true, but the difference is that fraudulent Credit charges go against your credit account, whereas fraudulent DEBIT charges come out of your checking account. Most banks (as far as I know) will reimburse your checking account fairly quickly, but in the meantime, you're bouncing checks, or having valid debit transactions denied.KC5AV wrote: If a debit card is processed through the credit card system (an online purchase would be done this way), you have the same protections as if you were using a credit card.
