Reads like the guy failed to follow the process and get written authorization from the principal...
I hope it leads to nothing worse than an administrative reprimand..
IMHO, High School is WAY too late to teach gun safety, but, better late than never.
Although, I'm amazed they're teaching gun safety in any public school... Definitely a

Re: Mineral Wells TX Teacher brings AK-47 to class
I brought my (now deceased RIP) Grandfather's WWII Army Air Force Flare Gun to school when I was in the 3rd grade (sometime in the 70's) for show-n-tell....my teacher (Mrs. Snyder) went WIDE-EYED and rushed me to the principal's office....he liked it, it was even OK'ed by my parents, but in retrospect, they should've given her a heads-up. It was rusty/non-functioning, but still a nifty BIG item. No punishment from what I recall, other than, "don't do it again...."
Re: Mineral Wells TX Teacher brings AK-47 to class
I thought "school resource officer" was a police officer assigned to the school.Mineral Wells ISD policy also requires the principal to notify local law enforcement officials of the instructional program and that the teachers are authorized to bring firearms on campus.
“I don't think [the coach] was trying to get around the policy,” said MWISD Superintendent Ronny Collins, adding there may have been an informal tradition of simply communicating with the school resource officer.

Re: Mineral Wells TX Teacher brings AK-47 to class
Been away for a couple of weeks, so catching up on posts.
I think that is should be manditory for the schools to teach gun safety starting in the 1st grade. About the 6th grade they should teach basic hunters safety.
How else will a child learn gun safety, when the parents don't own or teach the child when young?
