1966 - Ground was broken for the World Trade Center in New York. Tenants began to move into the lower floors of tower 1 in 1970. The official completion date was April 4, 1973.
The twin towers were the tallest buildings in the world for a year, until a young whippersnapper in Chicago stood on its tiptoes and surpassed them.
1986 - A terrorist bombing at a discotheque in Berlin killed two U.S. Army sergeants and a Turkish woman and injured 230 people, including 79 American servicemen.
The bombing subsequently was traced back to Libya. President Reagan ordered an airstrike that killed some 15 people and injured about 2,000, on April 15.
Col. Muammar Gaddafi was uninjured and went on to "serve" at least another 25 years.
