This day in history - April 5

Post by seamusTX »

1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death for espionage. They transmitted nuclear bomb secrets to the Reds—though records opened in the 1990s and the memoirs of Andrei Sakharov indicate that the Russkies did not use the information.

1966 - Ground was broken for the World Trade Center in New York. Tenants began to move into the lower floors of tower 1 in 1970. The official completion date was April 4, 1973.

The twin towers were the tallest buildings in the world for a year, until a young whippersnapper in Chicago stood on its tiptoes and surpassed them.

1986 - A terrorist bombing at a discotheque in Berlin killed two U.S. Army sergeants and a Turkish woman and injured 230 people, including 79 American servicemen.

The bombing subsequently was traced back to Libya. President Reagan ordered an airstrike that killed some 15 people and injured about 2,000, on April 15.

Col. Muammar Gaddafi was uninjured and went on to "serve" at least another 25 years.

2063 - Zefram Cochran flew the first warp drive spacecraft launched from earth, and the Vulcans deigned to make contact with humans.

Oh, wait. ;-)
