However, I looked further into this rig and it's a very short barrel. Additionally, that's pretty much a sucktastic fixed rear sight. I also don't see any way of mounting a bipod to it. Let's face it, there is a necessity for most of us using 308 at range for an adjustable sight, optics, and a bi-pod.
It is a short barrel, but I think that given the role of "scout rifle," perhaps it isn't too unreasonable. I don't know about the rear sight, but either a Harris or Versipod bipod can be mounted to the sling swivel on the forend.

Ok, I've managed to find an Armalite dealer and they have two readily available. One is the standard AR10 flat top 20" black barrel. The second is the stainless match 20" barrel with the 2 stage NM trigger.

It's $50 more for the second one. I don't get it. Why only 50 bucks more for the second one? My other question is, that stainless rail and barrel: does it interfere with sight picture when using irons? Why wouldn't I want a SS barrel?
Cheers!

I will occasionally have trouble hand ejecting some rounds but never had any feed problems when shooting.

I have the exact same weapon with a round count of almost 4000. Not a problem one.

After a lot more research, it looks like it will probably be a standard Armalite AR10-A4 flat top and I'll just swap out the trigger with something a bit better (2-stage NM or RRA 2-stage). It appears that there is only a 200 FPS velocity loss between a 20" and 16" barrel. I'll see if I can find the user-generated data on that and post it for reference. I now\ have to hunt around Houston to see if anyone has one available either in store or able to order. It also looks like I may have already found a buyer for my LAR8, so I'll have room in the gun safe again!

Thanks for you input, guys.
Cheers!

Take a hard look at the Imbel FAL rifle. I bought one about two years ago and I love it. I generally shoot about 200 yards and this rifle will shoot better than I can shoot. I have no problem with 4 inch groups at that distance and that's as good as I can do at my age and with my eyes.

BTW I also have am M1A, Winchester M14(FA), and a CETME, and the FAL is by far the best shooting rifle.

I did give consideration to the FAL, but around here they price at a minimum of $1500. Now, add to that a rail/scope mount, bi-pod (and adapter), hand guard swap (the metal ones get hot), etc., etc., etc.... well, it just kinda irritates me off that I'd end up paying several hundred more for an old tech rifle. I've had that experience with the M1A and I'm not interested in going down that road again. A $1500 rifle suddenly costs $2000+. Understand I've been through two 308's and I'm sick of them not working or just needing a "little bit more" for it to do what I want it to do. The hobby started turning into an irritant. At worst I'd have to get a set of irons for it, but otherwise the Armalite should just work out of the box. No fiddling or fussing. Just plop my scope onto it and off I go.

Now if I could find a sensibly priced DSA FAL carbine, I'd consider it, but there ain't any possibility of me paying more for a FAL than a comparable Armalite AR10.
Cheers!

Aimsurplus.com had IMBEL FAL rifles for $999.95. They are out of stock right this second but they come and go frequently. At that price you could buy a bunch of goodies and stay under the 2k mark easily. But on the other hand Fountain Firearms on hwy6 had an Armalite AR10 20" barrel on the shelf last time I wandered in there a few weeks ago. It was in the 1.5k asking price range.

It's been quite the odyssey, hasn't it?

Dude..... I'm sooooo frustrated with all this. :banghead:

Whatever I get, I'm just going to take 200 rounds down to the range and let 'em fly until my shoulder cries for mercy.

Armalite, has always been good to me, that being said so has my M1A. I suppose every companies QC inspector misses one every once in a while.

In your OP, you suggested that the new rifle doesn't have to be semi-auto. Have you given thought to the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle?

MSRP is $995.00, which means you'll find it for less than that. If they made a left-handed version of that rifle, I'd snap one up for myself. Your main problem would be your stipulation that the new rifle must accept your 10x mil dot scope. This rifle would require a long relief scout type of scope. But other than that, this seems like a pretty neat rifle to me.
They do now. :tiphat: Ruger
