Can I carry to the gun show?

Post by Zoti »

This might be stupid but I checked the gun show website (The one taking place this weekend at the Dallas Market Hall) and I was wondering if I can carry my gun with my CHL on me to the show.

I know that guns that are brought to the show for purpose of sale need to be secured but I was wondering if I can carry my own gun on me.

Obviously, there is no 30.06 sign.

Might be a stupid question but I don't know.

Why do you think there is no 30.06 sign?

I have only been to gun shows in Houston and Pasadena, however they have ALWAYS been posted 30.06.

if you think they aren't posted due to being (mostly) at government facilities, well, they still post them.

So to answer your original question
Zoti wrote:I was wondering if I can carry my gun with my CHL on me to the show
it depends whether it is posted or not
AND
whether or not you believe they they can legally post (and enforce) a 30.06 at a government building (if that is where the show is at)

I've never gone to a gun show without carrying. There's no way I'm going to walk around with guns I might be purchasing or selling, as well as potentially hundreds of dollars in cash, without at least having a pocket gun. Since I'm in the Houston area as well, the only gun shows I go to are the ones held on government-owned property, and invalid 30.06 signs don't inhibit me any more than invalid 51% signs at a liquor store.

If you really don't want to snub even an invalid 30.06 sign, you can always carry to the show, get inside, clear/unload in the bathroom, and get your carry weapon tied at the entrance like any other gun you might be using in the show (provided you can do so safely and incognito). I love Suzanna Hupp's statement about how gun shows are the safest place in America when it comes to violent crime, so I wouldn't mind being unarmed solely inside the event itself. The parking lot and all that, though, no way I'd be unarmed.

All the gun shows in the Dallas area are posted with 30.06 signs.

I find it ironic, but yes the gun shows in the Houston area are posted with a compliant 30.06 sign.

:iagree:
I'm not going without a loaded gun. If the event is at a prohibited location (46.03, 46.035) or on private property with a valid 30.06 sign, I won't go inside. If it's in a government owned building that's not off limits, I will obey the law and ignore the invalid 30.06 signs.

If they don't want me to carry a gun, they should have the show in a school auditorium or a courthouse. :biggrinjester:

Just to add here, the DFW Market Hall shows (the big one) don't allow loose ammo. So the unload, get gun banded, browse, leave show and reload outside method wouldn't work, IF you wanted to follow the show's rules.

The answer is, "Yes, you can carry to the gun show.... and No, you may not carry past the 30.06 sign.

Semantics, I know... but seek clarity in all things.

It may be an invalid 30.06 sign. But it might cost you a night in jail and thousands in legal fees to prove the point

Or it may cost the arresting jursidiction thousands in compensation and legal fees for arresting you for something that hasn't been a crime for almost 8 years (30.06 on a publicly owned/leased premises). :rules:

Or much more likely, the point will be moot since you will never be discovered.

EDIT TO ADD: Dallas Market Hall is privately owned therefore off limits if properly 30.06 posted, though that's not what I was discussing above.

+1. How many convictions are there for UCW for 30.06?

Not True. I was at the gun show this weekend at Dallas Market Hall, and there was no 30.06 posting. (I triple checked)
The only sign on the door was "No Loaded Guns in the Show"
I thought...Finally a show that makes sense. :thumbs2:

Don't remember seeing a 30.06 sign as I wasn't looking for one (sold my carry weapon in the parking lot). But at least one of the "no loaded guns in the gun show" signs going in the front door said "includes CHLs".
Granted this is not a valid 30.06 sign but knowing the Dallas cops that work the show if they found you carrying a loaded weapon in the show you would get a ride and you will be out some bucks. Simply not worth it to me.
If you missed the "includes chl" wording, I would not be surprised if you missed the 30.06 sign. Just saying.
