Obviously it's not the best solution but maybe it's the best we can get with an overwhelming Republican majority in the Texas house and senate.

I'm almost surprised that staff member didn't include the State Capitol as an off limits location.
How in the world can we expect these folks to intelligently enact new legislation when they don't know the current laws?

The problem is that we don't have an overwhelming Republican majority in the Senate. I'm pretty sure whatever campus carry bill we want could get through the House with the current composition (if the calendars committee would ever get around to voting on HB750Ameer wrote:Not on property owned or leased by a government entity.RPB wrote:But if the "opt out" says 30.06 is "enforceable" then "policy makes law"

IMHO it wouldn't be that bad if we simply decriminalized campus carry for CHL holders. I don't think that state schools could prohibit carry by posting (they'd be just like any other state agency in that respect), and it could be fixed in the future to prevent them from promulgating policies prohibiting their faculty/staff/students from carrying (after the sky doesn't fall and the classrooms don't run red with blood with people carrying legally on campus.

You can't, thats the problem with half the politicians these days, they will stand up and act like an authority on the subject, yet they don't even know the basic law... maybe they should sit in in on a class before making up their mind...might give them a slight idea of what they are talking about.

Yes, it is. Its like writing a budget without knowing any accounting... such as if you spend more than you make you will go bankrupt, something that a five year old could understand, but apparently it is too hard for an irrational politician to understand. It is the same thing with writing laws for campus carry, while a rational person understand that a gun free zone = a defenseless victim zone = criminal's happy place, an irrational politician on the other hand can be told that gun's are scary, thats why we have police, no one should have a gun, so when we make laws preventing guns, then there will be no guns, because everyone respects the law that is put forward.baldeagle wrote:Is it too much to ask that the people who actually write the laws know what's in them?jmoney wrote:You can't, thats the problem with half the politicians these days, they will stand up and act like an authority on the subject, yet they don't even know the basic law... maybe they should sit in in on a class before making up their mind...might give them a slight idea of what they are talking about.![]()

I wish I could live in this happy go lucky world, but alas I live in a world of irrational politicians, and honestly a world were a basic grasp of reality is not obtainable by many in the population. So during my next three years of law school, and my last semester of undergrad I might as well be prepared to say moo and stare at my attacker with a blank face (granted I have not been able to gain the advantage), because it seems that I am destined to be treated like a stupid farm animal rather than a sentient being responsible for my own well-being.

You aren't the only one who feels the way you do...I'm in a similar situation. What makes it so irritating for me, at least to my mind, is the fact that I spent 20+ years serving in the USAF, with a spotless record...just to be told if I have the (otherwise legal) means to defend myself in what amounts to a public place, I'm now a felon. These politicians and academicians who care more about the criminals than the law-abiding make me sick to my stomach. I currently attend an "institute of higher learning" since one part of the Federal government does not recognize the work I did for another part of the Federal government...and I have to attend school to get "certified". I want to obey the laws...but the laws are written as a collective punishment, that does NOTHING to deter the bad guys. Just like school policies that both kids get suspended for fighting, when one is a known bully who constantly picks on other kids...and the other is some decent kid who finally said "Enough". I can't even have it in my car under the MPA, because if they do a dog sweep and its found, I get expelled (school policy, "think of the children", it might jump out of the glove box and go off). If there is even ONE Republican in the State Senate who held this bill up, I want to know the name, EVERYONE should know their name...I count on NOTHING useful from the Democrat Party on firearms matters...but Republicans should know better. My rant is done, thanks for allowing the vent.
Re: Not enough votes to move campus carry forward
I am also feeling your pain guys. Just looking at the post and comments on the Internet is pretty discouraging. The vitriol from the anti gunners is in full effect now and it makes no sense. When someone actually states facts and data in support on campus carry it doesn't matter then them. They just tear down rational arguments with nonsense fear mongering and down right lies! The sad thing is that politicians listen to there people. I guess what they say is true the squeaky wheel gets the grease. We just have to keep fighting and keep the faith

Senator Ogden. If someone would be kind enough to show us where to donate for whomever is running against him I would appreciate it.

Just like he didn't support us last time. This man needs to be retired next election. He'll probably announce he's retiring again, then change his mind. Someone needs to challenge him in the primary even if he decides to stay. His district deserves so much better.baldeagle wrote:Senator Ogden. I contacted State Senator Ogden and asked him to think about why he is opposing this bill. Yeah, I know, what good is one email when his staffers are screening them, but if enough folks send such maybe it will tip things in our favor. It only took a few minutes and didn't cost me any money. If this thing goes down wrong, I WILL send money to help someone campaign against Senator Ogden so he can become simply MR. Ogden.
