The above link is to the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas (west of Austin).
There has been much talk recently about American Civil re-enactors. They have been around for years in various
states, and do a fine job.
But recently I read this article on the extensive re-enactments of Pacific War island battles fought by US forces against
the Japanese.
A little background here on Fredericksburg, Texas - this was the hometown of Admiral Nimitz, whose family ran the hotel
in the center of town. This town was primarily settled by German immigrants. From this landlocked town far from the
ocean came Admiral Nimitz - one of the US Navy's finest blue water officers, and architect of Japan's defeat in the Pacific.
The boat-shaped hotel now is the centerpiece of the National Museum of the Pacific War.
For your own benefit, but also for a stirring road trip on which you could take your children, consider attending one of the
re-enactments.
During 2011 the re-enactment weekends are May 28-29; June 18-19; July 2-3; September 3-4; October 1-2; November 12-13;
and December 3-4.
You could combine the Fredericksburg trip with a visit just down the road to Luckenbach (sp?), from the country song fame.
It's a cool stop out in the country.
Happy travels, folks.

The museum is excellent, I love the town, and the reenactments are very neat. I highly recommend a trip to Fredericksburg for anyone who hasn't been.

Fredericksburg is on my "to do" list. I hear they have good winery tours and a peach festival.74novaman wrote:The museum is excellent, I love the town, and the reenactments are very neat. I highly recommend a trip to Fredericksburg for anyone who hasn't been.

We didnt get to see a re-enactment while we were there, but the museum was incredible. It is also unbelievably HUGE. It took us somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 hours to get through it, and we did not read ALL of the plaques.

There are some great wineries there. We went to one (I'll have to look up the name now) that was just getting started. Sat out on their porch listening to live music and drinking wine on a beautiful Texas afternoon.....it was amazing.WildBill wrote:Fredericksburg is on my "to do" list. If you head that way, take a look at the Hangar Hotel (http://www.hangarhotel.com/). Neat hotel out by the airport thats a museum unto itself.
Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view.

The main downtown area is VERY good. Lots of little shops and don't miss the old "Five and Dime", its a trip back in time!
