GPS Suggestions

I am thinking of upgrading my GPS to a unit with traffic update capability. Does anyone have any suggestions? I currently own an older model Garmin Nuvi. I have been pretty satisfied with it.

just to throw one out there, the Garmin Nuvi 1300LMT has Lifetime traffic AND lifetime Map updates which is a kinda cool deal to me

I recently bought a TomTom 350TM. Quarterly updates for maps and traffic updates. You can also go online and update any roads that you drive on that have changed to speed limits recently. I saw this model on the Frys Electronics website for $125. They will price match that in the store if you ask about it.

An important feature to look for is the lane indication that shows on screen how your intersections and highway exits are configured and which lane you need to be in as you approach. It saves a lot of last second lane changes that can be much more exciting than you'd like.

I just got a 1450 LMT (Lifetime Maps updates and Traffic) and love it. It has lane assist mentioned above. Also, I like the additional .7 inches of screen (5.0" vs.4.3") Doesn't sound like a lot, but next to my old 4.3 inch Nuvi 660, it is defiantly an improvement. Best Buy periodically has them on sale for $189 and Fry's sometimes has them for $179.

Our nuvi 265W came with lifetime traffic. It works very well, and I just recently figured out how to download, export, and view the recent track of a long trip. Lifetime map upgrade was extra cost, but was reasonable for us. Flexible and reliable, to the point that we picked up an Oregon trail unit this past month.

Do I understand that they have finally included wilderness trails operated by the forestry service? I have been waiting for such a feature. Without it, when you lose the trail, your compass doesn't tell you which direction you need to go to find the trail again. You have to criss-cross for awhile to find it.

You might want to look into a Delorme PN-Series handheld. They can use color aerial imagery, USGS Quads, and other imagery.

I have been using Delorme products for many years, and am quite satisfied.

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I am leaning toward the Garmin. The Delorme seem to be more for off-road sporting type activities. I will be staying on paved roads.

Thanks, guys. It looks like the Delorme Earthmate GPS PN-40 SE w/Topo USA 9.0 - BUNDLE is what I want. $250. And my birthday's coming up. WOW!

Is it the standard for GPS data to be free once you have purchased the hardware?

I am also in the market for a GPS and would like to have one operated on batteries
so that I can save my power sources in the truck for other devices that I run.
Are battery-powered GPS units available?
