Insensitive Cave Man

Post by jmra »

In a recent thread I discovered that I am an "Insensitive Cave Man" (ICM). At first I was shocked at the revelation, but as I pondered on what it really means to be an ICM I have decided to embrace it.

What does it mean to be an ICM? It means:
I hold the same values as my father and his father.
I believe that marriage should come before sex.
I believe marriage is the union of a man and a woman.
I believe In creationism, not some big bang.
When my kids do something wrong they already know the consequences.
When I find something of value I try to find the owner.
The truth is always better than a lie.
I hold the door for ladies and the elderly.
I hold my children accountable for their actions.
I tell my sons that I love them.
I willingly served my country.
I carry a gun to protect myself and my family.

Yeap, I'm an ICM!

Congratulations! You are exactly what the Green movement is looking for. After they get done taking away all forms of energy through regulation and taxation, all forms of meat as food because they oppose anything but vegetarians and stop all harvesting of timber because of the environment, all that will be left for us to do is live in a cave and eat berries. You'll fit right in - except that you'll have to give you your gun because those definitely won't be permitted.

More seriously, it amazes me that we have come full circle. Chivalry and the concepts that went with it were once deemed the manners of nobility. So many of us grew up with many of the same beliefs for which you are now scorned.

I've been looking for a place to relate this story and this sounds like the perfect one. A new music director in our church holds his doctorate in musical performance from an upper Mid-West university. He cannot get a job teaching there. He made the mistake of voicing his Conservative values and has been blacklisted. They only hire Liberal thinkers in those positions. He moved to Texas. Having learned his lesson, he never lets anyone know that he is a Conservative in his academic circles. Even here, he would be limited if they found out.

We have a small garden and grow our some of our own vegetables. I do my own car maintenance and mow my own lawn. I'm doing my own house remodeling. We've been married 40 years and believe in vows that we took. We've literally been laughed at by many as being "old fashioned." I guess you can make room for us in a nearby cave. We'd be pleased to be your neighbors.

A "friend" of a friend is a civilian contractor to the US military who counsels returning combat troops before they leave europe. The first time we met her I was amazed that she would so brazenly admit to some of her activities; Mardi Gras in New Orleans specifically to collect beads; trips to Key West for the Fantasy Fest "art show"; and that sort of thing. And she is a very good looking and well built woman with a Master's Degree and a variety of other credits to her name.

And extremely liberal, to the point of being a little to the left of the entire left.

And irrationally anti-gun, thinks the Bradys have the right idea but do not carry it far enough. I found her arguments against civilian ownership of guns to be dishonest and circular, depending on the truth of this one to justify that one, which is the sole support for the first. A few evenings spent in her company convinced me to give up on attempting rational discourse with her and I avoid contact with her when she makes her returns to the states every year around Easter (there is a reason for the season besides going to New Orleans.)

So why do I mention this?

Because she declared me a "Cave Man" years ago: We were out in a group, my wife, myself, several friends, and her, and I offered her my jacket to cover her somewhat revealing and inappropriate attire for dinner in a family restaurant. When I removed my jacket, my carry gun was briefly exposed and she noticed, and the negative comments ensued, which got the more interesting when it was reveled, as part of the discussion, that my wife, one other member of our group, and the owner of the restaurant, were all also packing.

Initially I found the "Cave Man" appellation somewhat insulting until I realized that by it she meant someone who sharees the values that I hold dear, pretty much that list above, and decided it was actually an honorific.

My grandpappy taught me to be a gentleman in the best Texas tradition, and if that makes me a "Cave Man" then all the better.

"My name is Mongo, and I am a cave man...."

"Hi Mongo!"

"It all started when I saw how much tax had been taken out of my very first paycheck. That made me look at the Constitution, and while I was looking at it, I thought "well, I should probably actually read the thing." Then I bought a gun because the Constitution said I had that right. It also said I had the right to believe in whatever I wanted to believe in, and the right to speak freely about it, and the right to freely associate with like minded people! I began to challenge the right of government to tell me that my beliefs, guns, speech, and free association were inappropriate...."

I believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman.
I believe that marriage should come before sex.
I believe that all humans, from conception to natural death, are deserving of human dignity, which includes an inherent right to life.
I believe all people should be modest and chaste in their words, thoughts, clothes, and actions, according to their state in life.
I believe those who are in positions of influence and authority have a greater responsibility and should act accordingly.
I believe that God had no beginning and was and is the creator of all that is, not in an atheistic happenstance of chance.
I believe we are the caretakers and stewards of His creation and have a responsibility to protect and preserve it even while we use it.
When my kids do something wrong, they already know the consequences.
When I find something of value, I try to find the owner.
I believe the truth is always better than a lie.
I hold the door and give up my seat for the encumbered, disabled, and those older than me.
I hold my children accountable for their actions and I teach them my values.
I tell my children that I love them.
I am a momma bear who protects myself and my family.

Does that make me a cave woman? Or do I have to bash vegetarians, oppose recycling and alternative energies, and belong to a particular political party?

:iagree: with all of the above. In additon to what was mentioned, I was also taught that when a lady approaches your table while eating, you should stand up as a sign of respect.

Some people might take offense to being called a "Caveman". They might prefer the all-inclusive term "neandersexual".

So easy. Even a caveman can do it.

I believe the basic political division in this country is not between liberals and conservatives but between those who believe that they should have a say in the personal lives of strangers and those who do not.

30 something, last known location was Rota Spain, ran into her in a Plano Public Library a few years back, but that was the last time I saw her. Her welcoming hug also served as a pat down and that kind of soured the reunion, she was shocked that I would carry in a library, wanted to know if I carried everywhere and I told her "everywhere legal." According to our mutual friend, she severed ties with them shortly before her departure and we have not heard from her since.
