Police foot chase in Terrell...!?

This morning while cutting the grass about 9A I heard sirens - nothing unusual since one of the major FMs is nearby, except these sirens stopped in the neighborhood. Read later on the Terrell Tribune website that the Terrell police were in a foot pursuit of a suspect that apparently started about a block away and eventually continued down the street we live on where the suspect entered an occupied house and left out another door trying to lose his pursuers. Yep - Terrell is not immune to this kind of stuff. Got me to thinkin though - wife inside probably messin with a computer game or engaged in TV, me cutting grass and not paying whole lotta attention, garage door up (but only while I cut that side of the house - when I go around I close it), door into house open. I haven't really thought about it - but hot, dirty, sweaty or not - I'm sticking my mouse gun in my pocket from now on and keeping the garage door down. Already carry my cell constantly. Anybody else?? What would you do if you suddenly found this guy running full tilt bozo at you, or entering the garage out the corner of your eye?

I pulled the short straw and had to mow the lawn lately as well. I open carried (My neighbors know and trust me). I closed the garage door after pulling out the mower. The front door was locked, the back door was in my sight the whole time. I do live with 2 adult male roommates though. It would be different with a family including little children.

Doesn't matter what you read online, it won't have the same impact as a situation happening on your own street.

...home invasions are so common now for ANY reason, you don't have to be wealthy, as OP shows...the defense weapons should be very near us in the house if not ON us...I wear cutoff jeans and a belt at home...and won't be caught whether in the yard, or the bathroom, or the garage, or the dinner table...without a primary weapon on me...if someone comes in my home or yard for trouble...a 5-shot .J frame isn't enough...I want to be able to win that battle above all others...it's a bit inconvenient, but how long does it take to kick a door in and enter???How many??? How many armed??? it's the times we live in...like it or not...three steps away on the desk is too far...be honest...our reactions aren't as good as they used to be...on us is safer with kids too young to be trained or grandkids than stashed...my 3 boys have been ready, able, and shooting since they were 8...all shoot better than these old eyes...and have been trained in when/when not...how...I'd stand them up beside any of the rookies I trained both on legal knowledge and proficiency...they'll learn if we'll teach them...

...the cell phone...is useless during...a spare mag or reloader would be of more value...we're talking ten seconds to win or lose in a lot of cases...or less...do some role playing and what if scenarios...it'll wake up the monster inside you...

Foot chases are not all that uncommon - we had two last night. One was mine and easily caught (shameless brag). Most people running are not looking to draw even more attention - sort of like snakes - they are more than likely more afraid of you, than you are of them.

However... preparedness definitely doesn't hurt.

Years ago when I lived in Plano, the Police used to drive down alleys. When they saw a garage door open and the owner not in sight of it, they would put a note in the garage saying "You weren't around, so we helped ourselves to your "stuff"!"
It got the attention of some. Of course, others just were oblivious.

I live in a good, low-crime area just west of Austin. However, having grown up in Chicago, I'm in the habit of always keeping my doors locked. If I'm not working in the garage, the door from the house to the garage is locked. And when I'm mowing the lawn, when I move from the front to the back or side of the house, I close the garage door.

I always set the alarm when I'm leaving the house, and at night.

I'm not naive enough to think I'm immune from thieves, but I don't go out of my way to make it easy for them.

...used to work in a pawn shop...one afternoon a guy came in hotter'n...Texas...and said while he napped on the couch, some guy just cleaned out his yard tools from an open garage...he described them in detail...about an hour later...in comes two guys...one the leader...stayed in the shelves "shopping"...the younger came up and set a blower and a Weedeater on the counter for a loan...I asked him for his ID and he gave me his license...I picked up the items and set them on the floor...then dropped his ID on them...and told him the police were on the way...I'd sent the boss in the back as they walked up...his "leader" made for the door...and he got real energetic wanting me to give him the stuff and his ID back...I told him NO...I knew who the stuff belonged to , the police would be needing his ID, and to calm down...at this point he spotted the Smith 645 on my hip...and made a noise like a deflating tire...headed for the door only to meet a large, husky officer who had a biiiiiiiiiiig smile on his face...it just wasn't his day...he gave up his "fearless leader"...said the guy'd come over with the stuff and claimed he din't have his license with him...sometimes the good guys win one...called the owner and he was GLAD to come get his stuff!!!
