Socioeconomic breakdown
Where can I find statistics (I know it was a thread here somewhere) that shows the # of CHL holders with college degrees, etc.?
I don't know where to look, and this will help me be armed (pun intended) when I debate my wife about guns, CHL, and the NRA.

In all seriousness, how are socioeconomic factors going to be used in your argument?

If I have some numbers that she can see, and realize "normal people" do carry on a daily basis, it'll make it more palatable to her.
And we have a spare bedroom, complete with bed...no need for the couch.

I don't know that Texas takes any of that information. Heck, the easiest comeback may be that with the price of a CHL class, holster, and handgun ignorant rednecks can't afford to carry!
But for anecdotal evidence, I have a bachelors degree and carry daily. And I'm planning on going back to school for a masters and doctorate someday. I'm sure others will chime in with far more advanced degrees than the one I hold.

Re: Socioeconomic breakdown
I know some educated red-necks who are gun nuts (have tons of guns and like to shoot things up). I've suggested that they get CHLs, but they don't really seem interested in it. I guess they see guns more as a tool for fun than for self-protection.

This I know is true.74novaman wrote: Heck, the easiest comeback may be that with the price of a CHL class, holster, and handgun ignorant rednecks can't afford to carry!![]()
But, of course, she would say that we couldn't afford it, either.
There's no federal data on it? There's federal data on everything!!

Re: Socioeconomic breakdown
Maybe you can emphasize the insurance analogy of having a CHL and then find some data somewhere showing the relationshipe between insurance purchases and education level.

Re: Socioeconomic breakdown
would she consider coming onto the board and discussing with the ladies why we carry? I think she would discover pretty quickly that we aren't a bunch of rednecks...we just won't let her on to the rest of the boards
OK, maybe not such a good idea, can't control her clicking...maybe you could print out a few of the articles that have been posted? Most of us are just moms, we carry so we can protect ourselves and our children. I'm concerned now because my daughter graduates this year and will be taking college classes, but is too young to carry, I guess I need to find her a self-defense course of some sort...up to this point we've always been together (I homeschool).
Uneducated? well, both my husband and I carry and we both have college degrees.
I don't know what 'normal' is, but I manage to 'blend in"

Re: Socioeconomic breakdown
I don't know how you would be able to tell if they have college degrees but the DPS website will tell you age, zip code, county, sex and race if I am not mistaken. It has been to many years now since I got my CHl. I don't remember them asking if I had a college degree? Since then I got a Bachelors degree and I don't know how they would monitor that?
As for socioeconomic status, well, poor people can't afford a CHL class and a firearm as easily but I would assume most CHl holders were lower middle class to upper class. I don't know what income puts you in those brackets anymore considering the cost increase of everything the last 10 years and the fact that wages have not kept pace with the cost of living.
Also, you can’t assume that people make less money just because they don’t have a college degree. Many of my friends don’t have degrees and they make way more money then me and are just as moral and law abiding as me. Experience and demand in your field is the most important requirement IMO. Of course there are exceptions to this like engineering, doctor, lawyer, dentist etc. These jobs often or always need these specific degrees to get in that job field.
This is still why so many people still get business degrees in college. It generally can get you a decent entry level job in a wide range of fields. I know guys who graduated with 2.0-2.7 GPAs in business and all make at least twenty grand a year more then me and I graduated with a 3.8 GPA in the top 3% of my class with a degree in the social sciences.
If anything a CHL is a judge of moral character more then socioeconomic status. You know for the most part that 99.9 % of us are law abiding citizen’s whether we are rich, poor, educated or non-educated. A CHL is a better background check then a college degree.

I consider myself a redneck, a nut job, and I seem normal to most. I'm working on my MBA... and I carry everyday. <<<that rhymed BEWARE!!!Because she thinks that all the people who conceal carry are "uneducated rednecks" and "nut jobs", and that "normal people" don't carry guns on a daily basis.

Re: Socioeconomic breakdown
There are statistics on this for gun owners, based on surveys IIRC.Jasonw560 wrote:Where can I find statistics (I know it was a thread here somewhere) that shows the # of CHL holders with college degrees, etc.?
I don't know where to look, and this will help me be armed (pun intended) when I debate my wife about guns, CHL, and the NRA.
I don't think that's available for CHL (and who among us would tell a stranger on the phone whether you have a CHL, your education, how much money you earn, what hours you're not home, and other personal information?)
I believe the basic political division in this country is not between liberals and conservatives but between those who believe that they should have a say in the personal lives of strangers and those who do not.

Good luck with that.If I have some numbers that she can see, and realize "normal people" do carry on a daily basis, it'll make it more palatable to her.

Interesting.Because she thinks that all the people who conceal carry are "uneducated rednecks" and "nut jobs", and that "normal people" don't carry guns on a daily basis.
According to the TX DPS, the "uneducated rednecks" and "nut jobs" licensed to carry, are far less likely to be convicted for committing crimes than are "normal" people.
DPS stats here: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... vrates.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
According to those stats, we would be better off with MORE "uneducated rednecks" and "nut jobs".

Thanks for all of your input. I might have her sign on to the board and peruse the women's section.
And, I might add, she's a little trepidatious about my AD with a .22.

I'll work on her some more.
