I didn't expect so many responses. Of course, I do know that the "Wild West" was and is just a bunch of hype. I was just throwing an answer to the anti gun accusations.

That is an important point. Modern people have largely outsourced their personal protection (to the police), and some do not wish to be reminded that they are shirking their responsibility to protect themselves and their family. The expect protection (as taxpayers) and are uncomfortable with the idea that "when seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

It's like the woman the other day in walmart. complaining to her partner, that schools are falling down on their jobs because they arn't teaching her kids proper values.
