Said much the same to me, and offers of aid rolling in too.

One does not have to have reached retirement eligibility to make E8, but it is kind of unusual. I have a friend who basically started out as an E6 and went up from there for 10 years, and then left. Something to do with nuclear stuff, his college training, and secret, but he was an E8 when he got out and is just waiting until he hits retirement age to put in his papers.

You don't even have to be retired from the military to be eligible for burial in any of the National Cemeteries. All that is required is that you have been honorably discharged.

Forgot to mention though. The government won't pay for the casket and we may have even had to purchase the burial vault it's been over 10 years since I dealt with it.

They give you a plot and a headstone. Nothing more, nothing less.

I believe your family also gets the flag that drapes your coffin.

I think that may be provided by the MIlitary service if you can get them to the funeral. But you might be right. The VA provides the plot and the stone.

Good enough for me... I'm planning on building my own box and storing it in the top of my garage...ha ha ha...yeah that's how cheap I am and after I'm gone what the heck do I care what I'm put in the ground in.

The funeral director should have the forms The headstone has to have some choices designated as well. Just did all this for my Dad.
