Traveling to CA by van this summer. That means

I have to put my gun in a lockable case with padlock and in the trunk of the vehicle. I have to disassemble the hi cap mag , right ? I ll be coming through NM then to AZ then Utah and finally into Nevada. BTW Nevada doesnt recognize Texas CHL holders so thats a bummer.
IN my case since its a van, CA law says it should be in the trunk. So that would mean in the very back . Do i have to put it inside the where the extra wheel is by lifting the plywood cover ? Lol.

No, but ammo must be locked up sepratly. HC mag are illigel in CA, nothing over 10 rds. How I used to trasport when I lived there was cable lock the Gun, place gun in lock box, which was then placed in a sports bag. Ammo was locked in a small safe. I had a truck, there was no way I could lock things up in a seperate compartment. Anything the gun is locked in HAS to be DOJ approved.

Not quite so extreme. Nothing has to be DOJ approved, and locked up in separate container. The factory gun box with a lock is good enough.

The best and all safest(legally) way to transport is gun unloaded in locked container in very back of van. Ammo doesn't have to be in a separate locked box, as a matter of fact it can be loaded in the magazines(as long as the are 10 rounds or less) and in the same box, just not inserted in the gun. Just for the sake of simplicity have the ammo separate from the gun in the back, it does not have to be locked up.

Remember if you get pulled over and if(and thats a big if) they ask if you have anything in your van, just state, I have nothing illegal in my vehicle. That's it, not an issue.

Yes it's stricter in California, but it's not quite NYC or DC standards yet, as many would have you believe.

Zig Zag- I took almost the same route - Utah. I did a lot of research. Heres what I learned.

New Mexico- Good to go just remember that you can only conceal one weapon on your person at a time. I opened carried in my car the whole time. You can NOT carry in state parks and you can open carry with certain restrictions, check DPS website. Check restaurant rules pertaining to liquor. I think they made a few changes recently. Check NM DPS website and concealedcarry.net
Check laws on passing through Native American Tribal land. This is where you will have the most problem, not going through California.

Arizona- Laws here are so laid back on guns. You can open or conceal carry without a permit. Constitutional carry state.The only place your CHL helps is in places that serve liquor. Once again check Conceal carry net and DPS website. Your main concern is tribal land. Most do don't recognize your CHL. Many tribal lands have strict gun laws. Remember they are sovereign and have their own laws. I know a lot of people get their weapons confiscated if stopped on tribal land and good luck getting it back. I drove around Phoenix so I didn't have to deal with any of it.

Also, Nevada is an open carry state. I called Vegas PD and NV state troopers and they said open carry was fine but they didn't recommended it in Vegas because it freaks out all the people from the liberal states or other countries. The thing I found funny is that you can open carry on the strip in Vegas. No one will let you into a casino but you can open carry all you want if you please. There are two exceptions to this. North Las Vegas police and Boulder city police supposedly have a city law saying no open carrying even though it contradicts state law.

Not as of when I moved 5yrs ago. Open or concealed was an automatic felony, even in your own property if it could be seen from a public area

I'm actually driving back to California next week for a 2 week trip. I'll be bringing one of my .45s—haven't decided which one yet—and my .357 snubbie. My wife is leaving both of her guns at home. Her Glock 19 is legal in California, but not the 15 round magazines for it.

Until 5 years ago, I lived most of my life in California. I always transported the guns either in a padlocked plastic gun box, or in the manufacturer's box the gun came in, with a padlock on it. Guns were unloaded, empty chambers, with loaded magazines in the box, and 1 loose round in the box. Never had any problems. Never had any cop friends tell me I was doing it wrong.

I intend to conceal my carry weapon once i cross into NM and AZ.

By the way i really wanted to see the Monument Valley which is under Navajo Nation jurisdiction. Since we plan to visit this place and drive around the valley , the gun will be in the case and inside the bag. Now my question is, do they regular stop vehicles and do a thorough search ? I dont think they do that unless they suspect you of being a criminal. Or some rogue indian sheriff doing random harassment. But since im traveling the gun is there but well concealed in the bag.
