Great day at the range today...

I recently picked up a Ruger 10/22 for a great price, mounted a spare scope it, and finally got to the range with it today. The only targets available to me were 100 yds, and I was having a heck of a time zeroing the scope. At one point, I started shooting at some metal hanging targets that were in a covered shed-like enclosure to see if I could tell where the bullets were going based on the dirt kicking up. Low and behold, I realized I could actually see each of my bullets flying downrange. I have heard about this phenomenon, but had never witnessed it. I guess the sunlight must have been just right or something, but I could immediately tell where my bullets were going and adjusted the scope accordingly. That was a blast. Through the reticle I could watch the bullet rise above the horizontal crosshair, then fall as it traveled to the target 100 yards away. It worked so well, I tried it on the 200 yard target, too. The drop on that bullet was crazy at 200 yards, but it was great fun.

For work out past about 65y, I'd try using subsonic ammo. The reason being is that with normal "high velocity" ammo (including minimags), your bullet is going to be transitioning from supersonic to subsonic along the way. This introduces turbulence which amounts to uneven aerodynamics along the surface of the bullet, which will affect accuracy. For standard "high velocity" ammo, this transition will happen at about 65y (about 2/3 downrage of a 100y target). The further out your target is, the more pronounced the problem will be. A subsonic round will not have this problem, and should remain more stable along the flight path to the target. I have found the CCI "Standard Velocity" round to be a very consistent and reliable subsonic .22LR choice. Another option if you're going to shoot at 100y is to use the Aguila Supermaximum round, which sends a bullet downrange at 1750fps - fast enough to sustain supersonic speeds out to 100y.
