Renewal when oversea's ?

I work over sea's in the oilfield and don't come home to Texas but twice a year. I will be up for my 1st CHL renewal here soon. I have my CHL now but as I said, I am working oversea's. I will be able to come home and be in Texas for about 3 weeks. How far in advance of my birthday should I come home to get everything done that I must do in order to ensure my renewal is done properly and in a a timely manner before I have to return to work?

I can apply online from oversea's but I am not sure about all the sequential steps?

Any help and advice would be most appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you can apply up to six months before expiration.
