CHL Background Check - Mental Health

Post by WOWOW »

I'm 22 right now. When I was a kid, I was hospitalized with an anxiety disorder. Nothing that affected judgment. I have seen shrinks on a periodic basis (not regularly) for a while, but stopped doing this about a year ago. I am fine. I take medication but that's only to curb the anxiety. Again, my judgment is not impaired. All this happened in another state. I was never found to be mentally defective or involuntarily committed. My question is if I leave this off of the CHL application, will it pop up on some database. I have a government security clearance and it is listed on the sf86, but to be honest, what happened when I was a kid does not seem particularly relevant now, especially in light of that it was a unique situation and didn't affect my judgment, only my anxiety level. And for the record, I've never been considered a danger to society or to myself. Absolutely no criminal history (excluding a speeding ticket).

Thanks,

Thanks,
Welcome to the board,

Most likely you will have to disclose this info on your application, DPS would send you medical forms to fill by your doctor that stating that you are mentally fine person. Someone here will post more info.

Voluntary psychiatric hospitalization triggers a two year wait.

A diagnosis of a general anxiety disorder shouldn't disqualify you. (I am not a shrink.)

The disqualifying diagnoses are
(A) schizophrenia or delusional disorder;
(B) bipolar disorder;
(C) chronic dementia, whether caused by illness, brain defect, or brain injury;
(D) dissociative identity disorder;
(E) intermittent explosive disorder; or
(F) antisocial personality disorder.
and chemically dependent substance abuse.
sent to you from my safe space in the hill country

I had to get a psychiatric evaluation recently for a medical procedure. Wow was I surprised when it came back OK. :eek6

Now if I can get my co-workers to have one---- :evil2: "rlol"
God Bless America, and please hurry.
When I was young I knew all the answers. When I got older I started to realize I just hadn’t quite understood the questions.-Me

I see it is your first post, so WELCOME.

They ask if you have ever had psychiatric treatment on the online application. Even though it sounds as though you are eligible for a CHL, make sure you don't lie on the application. IIRC, lying on the application is grounds to deny the license.
