Shipping a handgun from California
Does it require a FFL to get a handgun from Cal. to Texas? A guy I work with is buying a S&W 9mm from his brother in Cal. Probably something I should know but I've never done it.

Yes, an FFL on the Texas end is required by federal law, California may require the firearm be transferred out by an FFL as well, not sure about that though.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

Make sense but what threw me off was that I have sent guns back to factories before (I guess they are FFL) and I shipped the top half of one of my ARs to Wilson Combat once.

You can ship a firearm to an out of state manufacturer or gun smith (they do have FFLs) and they can ship it back to you directly but keep in mind that the California aspect of your original question is something I can not address. The top half of your AR requires no FFL as it is not the regulated part (that would be lower).

He said the California FFLs charge $75 but that gets the price of the gun a little borderline. Thanks for the help.

If California law does not require the gun be sent out of state by an FFL then he can ship it directly to a Texas FFL for the cost of shipping. I believe http://calguns.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; would be the best place to ask about that aspect.

Normally you can ship to a FFL in the state of deleviry, however California is a strange and scared state. It's best to error on the side of caution than to face a very large fine.
I knew a man once that was invited to a regatta at Hemingway Marnia in Cuba. At the time a US citizen could travel to Cuba but was forbidden to spend any US money. When the weekend was over the customs authority in cuba demanded a port transist tax be paid. He paid it and included the reciept with his ship's papers when re-entering our customs. Several weeks later he got a letter from the state department that he had incurred a $75,000 fine. It's the little things that can really hang you out to blow in the wind.
