My solution, if you can, is find a DPS office in a small town close by..preferably one with less than 10k people. PILOT POINT AND AUBREY COME TO MIND. Only takes a few minutes. even with drive time, it will be much faster.

funny I came from socal and the dmv was great there. it was just a matter of knowing what one to use. I used to go the one in newhall. it was a 20 min deal when the line was long. now going to the one in arleta was a nightmare.

Well that explains it. The ones in Pasadena and East L.A. were nightmares. I wanted to burn them down.

You know you can renew your DL online, right?
I did mine online last year. Took me zero time.

You can renew online EVERY OTHER time. The OP's comment about "I was out of there for 12 years!!" indicates this was his required in person renewal and that he is aware of not needing to renew in person next time.

Yes, this was my very first renewal, so I had to go in person. Next time I can renew online and save some time.

Wait until it's time to renew your CHL. You'll be sitting around for four hours (class) instead of two, and then you have to wait weeks or months for DPS to mail the renewed license to you.

I won't mind this as much, it'll be better then 10 hours. Plus I'll get to do some shooting, which always makes things better!

Carrollton DPS office opens at 8am. I arrived at 7:15 and was standing behind the building about number 75 in line. Once the doors opened I was finished about 8:45.

Well not everyone is a privileged citizen.

I can sympathize with the CA DMV experiences. I hated our loal offices in Northern California. Talk about a broken gubmint system. The DPS experience was great in comparison.

Just renewed mine for the first time last November. I did it online. I was unaware of the every-other-time thing. But first renewal is doable online.

On the south side of DFW, the Cedar Hill DMV ususally moves pretty quickly. I have a CDL and have to go in person each time. The last time total in and out time was about 30 minutes.

The smaller cities have more efficient offices.
