My wife got me a Nook Color for Fathers Day and she has been reading a lot on it. Well now I get it, as I will be doing a lot of traveling. I dont care to read a lot, but I am told and have read various FAQ's on BN.com on how to put videos on it.
I have a microSD card, so have plenty of space available.
However, In trying a few different ways to take DVD videos to MP4 format, I am having nothing but trouble in getting it to work.
If you have a Nook Color and have first hand experience in the encoding of the video files to making them play on your Nook, and wouldn't mind sharing your knowledge, I would love to hear how you got it to work.
thanks in advance

Re: Nook Color - Videos?
I don't have a Nook, so I don't know how well this will work for you.
Go to http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html and download "CloneDVD mobile". If your DVDs have copy protection, you might also need "AnyDVD".
Both programs are free for 21 days. If you like and want to keep them, you can then purchase them.
You will want to copy to the "Generic MP4" format and adjust the settings to playback on your device.
I have several of SlySoft's programs and they work well for my purposes.
Best of luck!

Is the trouble playing mp4 files or converting existing files to mp4 format?
sent to you from my safe space in the hill country
Re: Nook Color - Videos?
I can convert them to .mp4 format using various programs as shown in the BN.com forum, but some of them will play and some won't play.tbrown wrote:Is the trouble playing mp4 files or converting existing files to mp4 format?
it is very frustrating! LOL
I was just telling my wife, I have now been trying to do this for 24 hours (off and on) and have a total of 2 movies on my nook that play (at least the first few seconds is all I made sure showed)
I tried "The Dark Knight" with 3 or 4 converters, and none of them will play on the nook.
I just did another (The Watchman) on a program that worked not an hour ago on a different movie, and "The Watchman" won't play on the Nook.
I can't see that it is something I am doing wrong (at least using the same program with the same (default) settings works off and on, I am thinking there are varying degrees of MP4 format, or a different program that may work?
the current converter that I am using is DVDFab (demo)
I have tried Handbrake and DVD Catalyst, and a couple other that I have already uninstalled from my PC
Any other programs that work most or all of the time and worth the $$?
Are there tricks to using the programs I am using now?
Also, I am having to do all of this direct from the DVD, is there a way to move the movie to my PC so it does it quicker, or differently?
Thanks in advance

Re: Nook Color - Videos?
Are you able to play the ones that don't work on the Nook on your PC? I use Handbrake and I find that it works for most things. Sometimes newer release movies don't work because they've changed up the copy protection and Handbrake can't copy it yet.

I was thinking there may be a time frame of a movie, or even a production company that may have different encoding that may prevent it.BrianSW99 wrote:Sometimes newer release movies don't work because they've changed up the copy protection
When you use Handbrake, can you give me your step by step so I can try to duplicate it?
Are you doing it direct from DVD, or is there a way to put a number of DVD's on your PC and set up a queue to do a batch of them overnights?
thanks

Re: Nook Color - Videos?
I use Handbrake to rip directly from the DVD to mp4 format. There are other utilities you can use to rip the DVD content as-is without changing the format, but as long as your end goal is to get it into mp4 format I don't see any reason not to do it in one pass.
For the Handbrake settings, I pretty much leave them at the default. My output format is MP4. For video quality I select Constant Quality and give it a setting of 20 for standard DVDs. That's the only thing I change.
If playback works on the PC but not on the Nook, it sounds like it's being picky about something in the encoding, but I'm not sure what that would be. On the other hand, I hear Nook's are easy to root and install Android on :)
