My Son is a Police Officer (called Constable up there) with that Department (Royal Newfoundland Constabulary) but although he lives in Topsail/Paradise area (where this happened) he is currently stationed in Wabush, Labrador for 3 years.

When I lived in Pasadena, I got assaulted by a HEAVY earthenware coffee mug which held 16 ounces (seriously, I really did, I got a bloody head and everything) .... they should limit them to 10.... oughtta be a law ...

She's an EX- now ... I escaped ...and ... she got her meds changed ...

About 15 years ago this particular Police Dept didn't even carry guns in patrol cars or on their person!
They had a "Patrol Shift Van" that was out for each shift that carried weapons to take to trouble spots when needed!

It took them several years to transition to where they are today and carrying sidearms (Sig .40's). They went thru a period where they were allowed to carry them in their Patrol Car trunks!
When they were dispatched to a serious crime (such as burglary, robbery or "Man with a drill") they had to find someplace where they could arm up from their trunk without the general public seeing them!
And.... the dispatcher could not authorize arming, only the Patrol Sgt.

They are finally with the times now!

Here's a bit of their History*:
"The RNC dates back to 1729, with the appointment of the first police constables. In the 19th century, the RNC was modelled after the Royal Irish Constabulary with the secondment in 1844 of Timothy Mitchell of the Royal Irish Constabulary to be Inspector General, making it the oldest civil police force in North America. Mitchell served as inspector and superintendent of police until 1871, when the Newfoundland Constabulary was reorganized with a new Police Act.

Other officers recruited from the Royal Irish Constabulary to take command of the Newfoundland force included Thomas J. Foley who served from 1871 to 1873, Paul Carty, who headed the RNC from 1873–1895, and John Roche McGowen, who served as constabulary inspector general from 1895-1908.

During World War II, the RNC pursued not only spies but also criminal elements within the foreign military stationed at St. John's. Their investigation into the 1942 Knights of Columbus hostel fire has become popular knowledge.

In 1979, Queen Elizabeth II conferred the designation Royal on the Newfoundland Constabulary, in recognition of its long history of service to Newfoundland and Labrador, making it one of only six police forces in the Commonwealth of Nations to receive such an honour.

On May 3, 2005, the RNC made a formal exchange of colours with Garda Síochána na hÉireann to mark the historic links between the two forces.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary serves alongside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which is contracted by the provincial government to provide provincial and community policing services. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary services mainly major metropolitan areas while the RCMP serves smaller and remote rural areas.

The RNC currently polices the following areas:

St. John's Metropolitan Area (St. John's, Mount Pearl, and surrounding communities)
Corner Brook
Labrador West (Labrador City, Wabush, Churchill Falls, and the surrounding area)

Thanks for the history lesson Alan. FWIW, I was just giving AEA a bad time about the picture that he posted. I had the pleasure of meeting his son a few months ago when he was visiting from Canada. He is a very fine young man. I know that dad is proud of him.
