The Congo. Definitely one of THE most messed up regions on the planet.

Went to a school with an SF gent that did a lot of work over there training various military organizations. He told me how his team built a water tower in the camp, and upon completion, one of the local troops walked up and asked him:

"How did you know that when you put the water IN, it would come OUT?"

:headscratch

I looked at the SF dude puzzled for about a half a second as he stared at me with a poker face, then I realized the implication of the locals' question.

"Uh....you mean....the dude didn't understand the concept of...GRAVITY?!?"

The SF dude laughed and told me "Yup. NO concept."

To this day, many of them STILL have and believe in the power of the local witch doctor. The SF dude said some of the guys had "special" amulets and such, purchased from witch doctors, that made them invisible from enemy forces and impervious to bullets. Go figure.

That's Africa for ya. Well, at least sub-Saharan Africa. North Africa has its own brand of madness, but their particular brand of crazy isn't nearly as potent as that found in the south.

Dennis Miller, the Saturday Night Live alum and stand up comic, has his own talk show on AM radio.
He make good points, is funny, and has some great guests on.

He stated: "Why is it that the West has sent billions of dollars to Africa over the years, and the continent's still a mess?
I know why - it's because the money never reaches the people. It's all stolen by those cats that wear the leopard hats!"

I'm unable to put names on the leopard hat wearers, but I'm sure they have Swiss or Caribbean bank accounts.

Speaking of 3rd world hellholes, I used to know a few guys from Haiti.
They told me that their country is riddled with corruption and misery.

The Germans contributed a nice new ambulance to a Haitian hospital.
The President's wife, or the wife of some other official, commandeered the ambulance as her personal vehicle to go
on Haitian shopping trips and be taken to the airport. She had a chauffeur do the driving. The reason that she went to the
airport is to fly to NYC or Paris, France to go shopping.

Sheesh.

I wish so much that these women had weapons, knowledge of their appropriate use, and encouragement to use them.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

Yeah, don't tell my wife about that purple salt; I have some tree limbs that need trimmed and other yard work/landscaping she has wanted me to do for a few weeks.

This goes way beyond "tradition".

I have no personal experience with Africa. However, I read and pay attention. Billy Joel's song "we didn't start the fire" mentions the Congo, but that horror was in the 50's.

Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, for one:

Andy, you're the man for coming up with that picture.

Another sad African country is the former Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe. The new black leader confiscated all the white-owned
farms and gave them to this cronies. They aren't farmers, so these formerly well-kept, productive farms have stopped producing food
and are not maintained. Sheesh.
