not sure how it works when you pay by card, but you get a receipt with the meal total (including tax) you put the tip and a total and sign it.Pug wrote:And you signed the receipt with a $2,100 tip???
you don't get it back after they enter the tip in the machine - or if you do, I have never gotten that, after thousands of meal transactions

dang!
once you sign the receipt, the waiter stores the in their receipt stack until the end of the night. once their shift is over, they 'close out' by entering all their tips at once into the terminal - which then prints out a close out statement that they take to the manager and review... this is how they get their tips at the end of the night.
now, what's funky is - if this went through this far, it means the manager may have either overlooked the total (not sure how you can overlook someone taking home over 2K in tips) or their system charges the card before the closeout is conducted.
either way, you didn't tip the guy 2K and it'll be reversed. hopefully it was an honest mistake and this yahoo wont be going to prison for a few years... but i dunno - it is tailgators.

I've been a high-volume bartender/bar manager for nearly six years--while it's relatively easy for this to happen at the receipt-level, it blows my mind when I hear about it making through all of the channels and actually being charged.
The bar/restaurant should still have your original signed verification, including your $2.00 write-in. My suggestion: If you haven't already, call them up, explain the problem. Considering the amount of the error, they should take care of it immediately--if you get a real jerk on the line, make them hunt-down the credit card verification and/or request the entire transaction be refunded. It's not a difficult problem to fix, so long as you talk to the right people.

it was the manager who made the mistake and it went all the way through. Drained my acount and made rent check bounce. It took me a while but i got ahold of the owner after the lovely waitress/manager got an attitude with me. They refunded all money and paid late fees on rent.

One of the disadvantages of using a debit card is that the initial authorization takes the amount before the tip immediately. We had a restaurant ring up the wrong bill with our debit card and she swore it wouldn't go through because they hadn't closed it out... but when we got home it had indeed gone through and took about a week to clear up. If that happens again, I'll tell them to go ahead and close it out and give me the difference in cash.

Wow, how do they miss that? Is it common for this type of error to occur? I ask cause was it an error or was it intentional?

I seriously doubt that anybody would think they could add $2100 to a restaurant bill and have it go thru unnoticed. At least not in any of the restaurants that I frequent. So unless somebody thought they could "take the money and run", it had to be a mistake.
Range Rule: "The front gate lock is not an acceptable target."
Never Forget.

19.50 bill with 2.00 tip-total 21.50, total that was run 2,102.00 do not see how it could be an accident maybe 20.00,200.00 heck even 2000.00 but 2,102.00 on top of the 19.50 does not equate.
