CHL renewal and need for your Drivers lic.

Post by Weg »

Here is my situation : I went in to the DPS today and renewed my drivers lic. It does not expire until November but I wanted to get it done early. Also, I went online and started the renewal process on my CHL, filled out form, paid the money and got a confirmation. My questions is, the DPS cut my license in half ( Drivers license), gave me the bottom half back, and a paper driver's license, will I need to have my physical drivers license for the CHL 100 class? Seems like when I did the original class, they made a copy of both sides of my drivers license. Just don't want to schedule the renewal class, if I need to have my actual plastic drivers license before I can complete it. Thanks

I don't understand why they cut your DL. They have never done that to mine. I last renewed mine two years ago.

Because the temporary one they give you. Its illegal to be in possession of more than one valid drivers licensee. If it was already expired that might explain why they did not cut it.

Your paper version is now your drivers license, and it includes your photo and all other information. They would make a copy of that if needed.

They normally cut the top 1/4 - 1/3 off, so you still have that, but it invalidates it as a official license. If you renew on-line, your original license is still the valid one, with the receipt showing you applied on-line, until you get your new license, at which point the old one is no longer valid.

Your instructor will need your DL to make your CHL-100, and the verify your identity. Your temporary license, along with your old one will be fine for that.

And you still have your old CHL too, which has your DL, and your CHL number, and your picture. So, you should be good to go.

I just realized my photo is on the paper copy... I did not notice that before. It makes sense that the paper copy should be good enough being that it has all the same info including my photo. Thanks

...they ask for a both-sides copy for renewal, too...online page shows the code numbers on the license...I think they use those numbers to pull a picture??? different from last time, anyways...
