Re: For all you Aggies...
Going back to the late 1800's and early 1900's, a lot of salesmen were pitching the technology to people who had never seen one before. Few people could touch type, and the salesmen would type "TYPEWRITER" to demonstrate the functionality. Using a hunt-and-peck method of typing during a sales pitch, the salesmen found it handy to have all of the letters easy to find on the top row. I'd guess that this format also made it accessible for the customers-to-be who may have never used a keyboard to type "TYPEWRITER" on their own - being able to quickly find the letters. Putting the equipment in the customer's hands and evoking a quick positive emotional experience is a useful tool in sales.sjfcontrol wrote:Why would that be an advantage to the salesmen, or anybody for that matter?fickman wrote:Besides being laid out to prevent the keys from jamming when typing fast, the QWERTY layout had one other nice feature. . . all of the letters for "TYPEWRITER" are on the top row. The salesmen appreciated that and it was good for business. Legend says the designer tweaked the final arrangement of the letters with this in mind. . . but whether he did or not, it was probably a feature that helped the QWERTY format become established over the first 100 years of its existence.sjfcontrol wrote:Also, because there wasn't a distinct transition from Typewriters to computer keyboards.SQLGeek wrote:Tradition, because QWERTY was used on typewriters and it is what everybody was already used to.
Manual Typewriter, electric typewriter, IBM Selectric typewriter, teletype, keypunch, built-in computer keyboard, separate computer keyboard. And each used the QWERTY layout.
The first computer I ever used, an IBM 1620 used an electric typewriter that was mechanically controlled to print output, and had sensors attached to each key for input.
I doubt that this influenced the design, but I would imagine it was a nice benefit that helped establish the QWERTY format as a norm over the first 50 years.
It's similar to control+alt+delete. . . it was originally a tool for developers in the early days of PCs to use when their systems hung or they needed to reboot, but salesmen learned about it and found it handy when installing software or doing a live demonstration for customers. . . so it rapidly popularized and stuck around once everybody was used to it.

As somebody with no particular loyalty, I find the UT / TAMU feuds quite amusing...especially with TT being the red-headed step child of the bunch (or Ralph Nader if you will).

Third, TT is not acknowledged....
Forth, I can't believe no one has stood up for Cougar High!!
Fifth, she ain't an AGGIE Girl, she is a MAGGIE...

Texas is 75-37-5 all-time against Texas A&M, including 42-19-2 on Thanksgiving Day.
